In this 5 week course, students can follow along as I read aloud from Mr. Popper's Penguins each week. I will review vocabulary after reading and then complete fun activities or research relating to penguins.

Join me for some silly winter fun as I read Mr. Popper's Penguins aloud and we complete fun activities and research relating to penguins!

I will read chapters 1 and 2 aloud in class.  I will then review vocabulary and discuss what was read.  I will finish class by creating a character map.

Chapters 1 and 2

I will read chapters 3 and 4 aloud in class followed by vocabulary definitions and discussion.  I will finish class by showing pictures of penguins and telling students to draw their own penguin.

Chapters 3 and 4

I will read chapters 5 and 6 aloud in class followed by definitions and discussion. I will finish class by researching penguins to answer the following questions:
What are penguins and where do they live?
What do most penguins eat? How much do they eat?
How many species of penguins are there?
What sounds do penguins make?
What are their mating habits? Do they nest?
How do they care for their young?
What does a penguin egg look like?

Chapters 5 and 6

I will read chapters 7 and 8 aloud in class followed by vocabulary definitions and discussion. I will finish class with  assigning the task for students to create a nest for a penguin out of household supplies.

Chapters 7 and 8

I will read chapters 9 and 10 aloud in class followed by vocabulary definitions and discussion. I will finish class with researching Antarctica and assigning students to make a postcard from Antarctica to send to a friend. 

Chapters 9 and 10

I will read chapters 11 and 12 aloud in class followed by vocabulary definitions and discussion. I will finish class with making giving a recipe for students to make fake snow. (Shaving cream and cornstarch. Mix equal parts shaving cream (foam, not gel) and cornstarch for this recipe, which makes a dense, foamy snow that is very easy to mold.)

Chapters 11 and 12

I will read chapters 13 and 14 aloud in class followed by vocabulary definitions and discussion. I will finish class with  instructions for students to create and perform their own dance routine!

Chapters 13 and 14

I will read chapters 15 and 16 aloud in class followed by vocabulary definitions and discussion. I will finish class with asking students to write their predictions of what they think will happen next.

Chapters 15 and 16

I will read chapters 17 and 18 aloud in class followed by vocabulary definitions and discussion. I will finish class by having students complete a sequence of events of the book thus far. 

Chapters 17 and 18

I will read chapters 19 and 20 aloud in class followed by vocabulary definitions and discussion. I will finish class with  asking students to write and/or illustrate what their favorite part of the book was and sharing that with someone.
