The class will be introduced to the concept of selective breeding with a variety of AKC (American Kennel Club) dog breeds used as examples. We will discuss different reasons for selective breeding, such as more physically attractive traits or specific behavioral characteristics, and how this selective breeding can result in harm to the breed. Students will see photos of dogs that meet the original AKC physical standards and what those same breeds look like now, in order to meet the updated...
Students will learn what selective breeding is and the potential problems of selectively breeding animals. Students will see a comparison of original AKC standards for a number of dogs and current standards with physical changes and the negative consequences.
I have taught the topic of selective breeding using dog breeds as an example for many years in my 8th grade science classes. By applying the concept to dogs, the students can easily understand what it is, why we do it and what the potential problems of selectively breeding any animal can be.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
