1 in-class hoursClass Experience
I have taught this class for over thirty-seven years, and students love it! This class will teach students the interesting skill of scientific observation. We will learn the difference between an observation and an inference. Students will first learn to observe an object that the teacher will display and learn how to avoid inferences. This will be followed by students doing an observation of their piece of candy. Students' observations will be shared at the end of the class. This is a very interactive class, and students are encouraged to ask questions.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to use the five senses to observe objects from a scientific standpoint. We will discuss the five senses and how they apply to science. We will also learn about inferences and how to avoid using them during observation.
Other Details
Supply List
Students will need to have paper, a pencil, a ruler (12 inch/30 cm), and one piece of candy (example: Jolly Rancher, Tootsie Roll Midgie, SweetTart, M&M, or Hershey's Kiss, etc.) You might want to provide more than one piece of candy if you think that your learner might eat the candy before class is finished.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I love teaching all science disciplines, as well as language arts, reading, and music. I am a recently-retired public school teacher. I taught fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students for thirty-seven years with an emphasis in science and robotics! I enjoy watching children become excited about the world around us as they learn new skills in science. I believe that students who work to set goals and achieve them can gain poise and self-esteem.
In my spare time, I am an avid runner, horseback rider, bird watcher, and kayaker. I love to sew, knit, garden, and play the flute, guitar, and piano
