Students will read ancient myths, explore pyramid maps, learn about the gods and goddesses of Ancient Egypt as well as the process and purpose of mummification!
Class experience
This course is designed as an English Language Arts elective suitable for middle school and high school students. Discussion will happen in an open format, sometimes using digital response tools like Padlet or even writing about the reading or collecting their thoughts and jigsawing different topics collaboratively. Video clips will be used from Marvel movies, popular culture, and the horrible Horrible Histories from the BBC. Some slides, but this is NOT a note taking, lecture based class....
Students will learn about Ancient Egyptians: their culture, art, history, writing, and their myths and legends. This is primarily a mythology course, but all aspects of Egyptian life will be examined. Students will work to unpack these myths and to find the values of a culture that exist at the heart of all stories.
I am certified to teach English and Language Arts from 6th to 12 grade. I have a bachelors in English Education from Kennesaw State University, and I am in a master's program for English Education at the same university. Additionally, I am gifted certified and hold a micro-endorsement in dramatic writing. I am certified to teach this course and have taught this unit of study as part of a larger high school year long Mythology course at a public high school for two years. I have taught this portion of the course to students in this age range (freshmen to seniors).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Ancient Egyptians were sometimes violent and sexual, and their myths and stories sometimes feature violence and sexual themes. We will be exploring topics like magic, religious and spiritual beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians, and medical procedures like mummification. Please read the topics for each week and email me if you have any questions about any of the topics before registering the student.
