Second to Third Grade Summer Camp Boost: Review Math, Reading, & Writing Skills
This summer review camp will prepare your 2nd grader to transition confidently to 3rd grade. We'll strengthen math, reading, & writing skills through engaging math talks, fiction and nonfiction texts, student-guided writing, & word study.

1-2 hours per week. Math - Students will have a 1-2 math activities to complete after each session to review. (2 per week) ELA 1) Students will read 3 fiction texts independently over the course of the entire class. Students will complete pre-reading and after-reading reflection activities to prepare for class discussions. 2) Students will reread the non-fiction articles and complete the assigned questions independently after discussing the text in class. 3) Students will work on writing their How-To Text and Mixed Up Fairy Tale so that class time can be spent revising and editing the text.Assessment
Reading Comprehension questions will be graded and feedback will be provided. Math homework will be scored and feedback will be provided if necessary. Student's writing will receive feedback during revising and editing process. It will also be scored based on the provided rubric.Class Experience

Lesson 1:
Place Value + Nonfiction
Math: Students will review place value (ones, tens, & hundreds). ELA: Students will read a nonfiction text and focus on the main idea & supporting details. Students will also answer text-based questions (Who, What, Where, Why, etc.). Students will review fluency strategies.

Lesson 2:
Adding & Subtracting + Parts of a Sentence
Math: Students will add and subtract within 1,000 using regrouping. ELA: Students will work on parts of a sentence (subject -nouns, predicate - verbs, capitalization, & punctuation). Students will work on reading and spelling multiple-syllable words with short vowel patterns.

Lesson 3:
Money Word Problems + Fiction
Math: Students will learn to solve problems related to counting coins and making change. ELA: Students will discuss the fiction book "Mercy Watson to the Rescue," focusing on character analysis and identifying story events.

Mental Math + Prewriting & Topic Sentences
Math: Students will work on mental math strategies for adding & subtracting (e.g., making tens). ELA: Students will learn about expository writing and brainstorm/prewrite for a "How to Essay." Students will also concentrate on creating an engaging topic sentence. Students will also work on reading and spelling multiple-syllable words with long vowel patterns.

Parental Guidance
This class will use non-fiction texts and fiction texts (Mercy Watson, Bad Guys, & Princess in Black). Please make sure you look over the texts and make sure they work for your child.
We will also use Khan Academy as extra math practice as needed.
Kahoot will also be used during the last week for review.

Students must have completed 2nd grade curriculum.
