As an elementary classroom teacher, I have taught reading through guided reading for many years. Each type of genre offers new and explicit reading skills and strategies that students are able to apply, use and retain the information that they are presented and have read. Along the way they are building fluency and gaining in their reading abilities. I have seen young readers grow and develop newly found literacy skills in both reading and writing about reading that forster their independence. I have seen students achieve success and growth with starting a new beginning in guided reading.
