Hi, I am Teacher Meg! Welcome to Second Grade Phonics & Reading Comprehension. I am so happy you're here. In this ongoing course, we will cover second grade phonics while reading short passages for comprehension and fluency. It is recommended that your child be going into/already attending 2nd grade or have already taken my First Grade Phonics class. 

You can choose to drop in one week at a time or attend ongoing. 

Each class will follow the same format, 2x a week. It is not necessary to attend the class from week 1, as skills will be taught independently from one another and continuously reviewed. 


Week 1: 
-Phonics Skill: Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.
-Comprehension Skill: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Week 2:
-Phonics Skill: Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.
-Comprehension Skill: Identify the main topic of a text

Week 3:
-Phonics Skill: Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.
-Comprehension Skill: Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

Week 4:
-Phonics Skill: Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
-Comprehension Skill: Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

Week 5:
-Phonics Skill: Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
-Comprehension Skill: Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

Week 6: 
-Phonics Skill: Read words with consonant blends: bl, fr, sc, tr
-Comprehension Skill: Retell a story with accuracy. 

Week 7: 
-Phonics Skill: Recognize that 2 vowels together can make a new sound. Diphthongs: OI/OY
-Comprehension Skill: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Week 8: 
-Phonics Skill: Recognize that 2 vowels together can make a new sound. Diphthongs: AU/AW
-Comprehension Skill: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Week 9: 
-Phonics Skill: Recognize that 2 vowels together can make a new sound. Diphthongs: EW/OO
-Comprehension Skill: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.



I use my own created lessons through Google Slides to engage learners. Worksheets will be provided to reinforce learning and check for understanding.

My name is Teacher Meg. I am so glad you're here!

I am excited to offer different types of classes including... but not limited to:
Pre-K/Kindergarten skills (ages 4-6), Sight Words Classes (ages 4-7), First Grade Phonics, Writing Sentences, English as a Second Language (ESL) **Private Tutoring & Group Conversational English practice,  & Story Time/Art (elementary). 

My Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Science in 2012 from Barton College in North Carolina. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Elementary Education K-5, Middle Grades Mathematics 6-9, and Special Education K-12. I also hold a TESOL (Teaching English to speakers of other languages) certificate. I have 7 years of public school teaching experience. Currently, I am a Work-At-Home mom of two kids. I have been teaching online for the past 3 years, so I understand the importance of making students feel welcome and included in this setting.

My Philosophy:
I believe all children are capable of being successful, regardless of their backgrounds. I believe that every child has different strengths and can use their strengths to overcome their weaker areas. I also think that the more fun a child has, the more they will want to learn. 

Fun Facts About Me:
-I have a husband, a daughter, and a son. Both of my children enjoy taking classes on Outschool.
-I have 3 dogs and 1 cat.
-I enjoy running, baking, and finding new restaurants/places to visit.
-My favorite color is blue.
