Journey with us through our 2nd grade reading class where we will cover topics such as reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary building, identifying story elements (characters, setting, plot), and understanding main ideas and details. We will also work on different types of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Journey's Through Reading is a Second Grade Full English Language Arts curriculum designed by Houghton Mifflin Harcourts to target students interest while adressing prominent domains in reading and writing. Journeys is built on a deep foundation of scientific research but treats students as young people who need to be encouraged—and to have fun. The result? An engaging learning experience that fits. The Journey's class is structured with a mix of direct instruction, guided reading sessions, independent practice, and interactive activities. We begin with short lessons, followed by reading assignments, group discussions, and hands-on exercises like writing, word games, vocabulary challenges and learners notebook activities. I will teach by using a variety of strategies, such as interactive read-alouds, group reading activities, and multimedia resources like slides and short video clips. Students will actively participate by answering questions, discussing key ideas, and sharing their thoughts on the texts. We also work through our learners notebook together with adequate practicce for each learner. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to interact with me, both during whole-class, as well as beyond classroom hours. Please message with any questions! Reading Language Art Sequence of events. Henry and Mudge.
In Each of the Reading Language arts classes, students will have spelling and vocabulary words. They will develop comprehension skills through essential questions and students will review throughout the week. Henry and Mudge- Students will use this story to gain an understanding of sequence of events. They will also learns skills such as inference and predicting. 30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Sequence of events & Infer/Predict
Students will be given adequatee opportunities to work on skills each day of the week. Our process is teach, model, learn, practice, repeat. 30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Students Review and Practice
Students will review and practice new skills. Students will work in their reading journals. Students will practice their sparkling and vocabulary words. 30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Classroom Conversations Authors Word Choice
Students will participate in classroom Conversations regarding new skills. Students will dig deeper, write about reading, or read new skills activities. 30 mins online live lesson

This course is a Second Grade Curriculum but can be taken by First, Second, or Third Grade Students
Supply List
This class uses Journey's Through Reading Houghton Mifflin Harcourts Curriculum, Book, and Learners Norebook. Parents are asked to purchase the learners notebook. This can be found easily online for between $5-$10.

HELLO! I’m Ms Velvet, and I’m thrilled to be part of your child’s learning journey! I began my teaching career over 20 years ago in North Carolina, where I earned my degrees in Birth through Kindergarten and Early Childhood Education. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching children from Kindergarten through 3rd grade, both in the classroom and online. Along the way, I’ve also served as a curriculum writer, special education instructor, and parent educator for students with special needs.
In addition to my classroom experience, I’m a published author of children's books and am passionate about creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences for all students. While I’ve recently taught virtual classes to students from elementary through middle school( for the past 5 years), my heart has always been in the early grades, and I’m excited to return to what I love most.
As a homeschooling mom of two, I know how important it is to personalize learning and create an environment where students feel encouraged and supported. I’m also certified in TESOL and TEFL, enabling me to work with ESL learners, and I’m proud to be a 5-Star and ACE educator with Outschool.
When I’m not teaching, I enjoy traveling, sewing, and gardening on my small hobby farm. I believe that learning is most impactful when students are fully engaged, and I can’t wait to partner with you to help your child thrive!
