US Grade 2
Fear the Common Core no more! In this ongoing course, students will complete a 2nd grade math spiral review. A "spiral review" means that the standards covered in each class remain the same, but the questions change. Research has proven that long-term mastery comes from spiral review, also called distributed practice and spaced repetition. Since the classes do not build on each other, students may join or leave the ongoing class at any time. Our class size will remain small (up to 5-6 students) so the teacher can ensure every student understands the material. 1. Week 1 (9/4/2023) Place Value Concepts, Adding and Subtracting using various models 2. Week 2 (9/11/2023) Multiplication using Models, Word Problems 3. Week 3 (9/18/2023) Time/Measurement, Graphing 4. Week 4 (9/25/2023) Geometry, Fractions, Money After the fourth week, we will repeat the spiral review with different modeling strategies. Lessons do not build on each other, so students who enroll during the middle of the course will not need any accommodations to "catch up." Students will work with every second grade standard in our classes: 1. Operations and Algebraic Thinking: -Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. -Add and subtract within 20. -Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. 2. Number and Operations in Base Ten -Understand place value. -Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. 3. Measurement and Data -Measure and estimate lengths in standard units. -Relate addition and subtraction to length. -Work with time and money. -Represent and interpret data. 4. Geometry -Reason with shapes and their attributes. Mathematical Practices: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. During class the teacher will explain concepts to students using common core strategies that many public schools implement. We will use math models and strategies to add and subtract that go deeper than "carry the 1." We will introduce multiplication concepts that connect with student's number sense. Each class will be guided by the teacher, but students are also expected to write down and show their work in their own math notebooks or journals.

Other Details
Supply List
Students will need to bring paper and a pencil to class. Don't forget the erasers! :) If students prefer to use a whiteboard and marker, that is okay as well.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Georgia Teaching Certificate in English to Speakers of Other Languages
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Georgia State University
I taught second grade in Georgia for 5 years prior to becoming an Outschool teacher. I have thorough experience teaching Common Core math, and can scaffold lessons to meet students where they are. I have experience developing student's number sense, and increasing confidence using strategies.
