Seasons and Holidays - Celebrating Life Through Art!
Class experience
In this class, we'll celebrate life through holidays and seasons. These life events allow students to take a step back, assessing their joys, motivations, and special traditions. Each week we will celebrate a different holiday by making a personalized piece of artwork! During these classes, students will learn more about themselves and others through dialogue and artistic expression. Social and artistic standards they will practice include: National Content Standards (National Coalition for Core Arts Standards, 2014): VA:Cr3.1.3a: Elaborate visual information by adding details in an artwork to enhance emerging meaning. VA:Cn.10.1.2a: Create works of art about events in home, school, or community life. VA:Cr2.3.3a: Individually or collaboratively construct representations, diagrams, or maps of places that are part of everyday lives. Essential Questions (National Coalition for Core Arts Standards, 2014): VA:CrAS3: How do artists grow and become accomplished in art forms? VA:CrAS2:How does engaging in creating art enrich people’s lives? VA:CrAS2: What role does persistence play in revising, refining, and developing work? “I CAN” Statements (Young Audiences Arts for Learning): I CAN add details to give my artwork more meaning. I CAN create works of art about people, places, and things in my life. I CAN create a piece of art of a place I know by myself or with others. Essential Skills for Social-Emotional Learning (Oliver, 2018, p. 15): Knowing One’s Emotions Developing Constructive, Healthy, Ethical, Mutual Relationships Social-Emotional Competencies (Oliver, 2018, p. 27): Connection: the ability to have strong social awareness. Connection gives “students the ability to take the perspectives of others and empathize with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.” Mindset: the ability to demonstrate cognitive flexibility and a willingness to learn. “Developing mindset is a critical learning skill for building perseverance, adaptability, self-discovery, resilience, and the ability to receive and give constructive feedback.”
I hold a BFA in painting, a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, and a Master’s degree in Art Education, all from Indiana University, Bloomington. I am also licensed to teach K-12 art classes in Indiana.
Check the weekly schedule to see what materials are recommended for classes. Typically paper, pencil, and coloring supplies such as markers, colored pencils, crayons, pastels, etc. will be all we need.
During these classes, students will reflect on their lives, dreams, and communities. Therefore, a wide variety of topics will emerge naturally. If any topics arise that do not meet the Outschool criteria for appropriate content, or that are inappropriate for the participating age range, I will step in to ensure a happy, healthy experience for all students. My goal is to facilitate healthy personal reflections, as well as healthy, constructive relationships between students. Additionally, I will do my absolute best to make sure students from all backgrounds and cultures feel happy and safe within this platform.
