Seasonal Genre Writing: Personal Narrative, Opinion, Informational, and Creative Writing
Learners will use each week to complete a personal narrative, opinion, informational, or creative writing piece, using fun & seasonal themes. We will plan, organize, write, and work through the revision process together. We use songs/movement, anchor charts, and teacher modeling/directing to add visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities to the learning process. I keep my class size low for writing, so I can offer support appropriately.

This is an ongoing class that covers one genre over 2 days each week, rotating genres each week of the month. We will work together to plan, organize, write, and edit personal narrative, opinion, informational, and creative writing pieces. We will use songs/movement, visual anchor charts, and teacher modeling/directing to add visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities to the learning process. I keep my class size low for writing, so I can offer support appropriately. Here is what you can expect during each meeting: Day 1: We will learn the elements of the genre, we will complete our graphic organizer, we will begin with a strong topic sentence, and we will start on our body paragraphs. Day 2: We will complete our body paragraphs and end our story with a closing sentence; we will revise and edit, focusing on capital letters, punctuation, and finger spaces; we will add illustrations that match our words; and we will practice listening and speaking skills as we share our writing with our friends. This is an ongoing class, so students are welcome to join at the beginning of any week, but they will need to be present for each class within that given week in order to work through the two-day writing process fully. Hi...I’m Kristin! I have been in education for the past 25 years, ranging from early childhood through upper elementary school! My Bachelor’s Degree is in Child Development, with a minor in Music; and I hold a Master’s Degree/Teaching Credential in Cross-Cultural Teaching. At this point in my career, I have worked as a lead elementary school teacher in both fourth and first grades, training and leading a team of teachers in creating engaging, developmentally-appropriate curriculum utilizing active learning strategies and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of our diverse learning community. I also function as a mentor to new teachers, and often present on innovative teaching strategies, including promoting student engagement within the classroom through incorporating the Multiple Intelligences, helping to create a growth mindset, and establishing positive and trusting classroom management strategies.
English/Language Arts is my absolute favorite subject to teach, and I love incorporating phonics and writing strategies! Within early elementary school, there is such a range in students’ feelings/abilities, and small groups offer the perfect opportunity to develop the reluctant learner, and also to challenge the learner who is looking for deeper enrichment opportunities! I look forward to helping your learner grow and succeed in their writing abilities!
