Class Experience

Tết, or the Lunar New Year as it’s known in western culture, is arguably the most important holiday for the Vietnamese community. While Lunar New Year is celebrated in many different countries, Vietnamese people have specific traditions that are unique to our culture and heritage.

The next Lunar New Year is on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

In this one-time class, students will learn the origins surrounding the Lunar New Year, and I will discuss the difference between Vietnamese traditions and some other major cultures that celebrate. We’ll go over the lunar calendar and Vietnamese zodiac, as well as various Vietnamese phrases students can say to wish family and friends a Happy New Year.

Students will also receive a DIY Bầu Cua Cá Cọp game board that they can print and assemble at home to play with family and friends.

FORMAT:
5 min - introductions & questions
5 min - Gregorian vs. Lunar calendar; origins of the zodiac
10 min - Vietnamese zodiac and learning animals in Vietnamese
20 min - Presentation on Vietnamese customs before, during and after the New Year; phrases to say to elders during New Year
