Class Experience

In this class we will use a polymer oven bake clay, such as Fimo or Sculpy, to make a more realistic looking great horned owl in mid flight. We will discuss how to use small, simple parts in order to construct a larger, more complex whole. I will show step by step directions and discuss what I am doing, and share some awesome tips on making a realistic representation of nature.
The younger learners may require parental assistance making the clay more malleable. At the end of the lesson, once our owl is complete, the learners might need assistance with the use the oven in order to bake the completed project.

A basic set of clay tools is also recommended. In lieu of a set of clay tools, the learner can use household objects: a toothpick, a wooden skewer, an old toothbrush, a plastic knife, and a pencil with a pink eraser on top, etc.

Notes to learners and parents:
- Please be sure to follow instructions when baking the clay. The temperatures for this kind of clay is often quite low (around 250 degrees), and is stated on the clay box or wrapper.
- For this class it is important that we all begin at the same time. If, for any reason, the learner will be delayed by more than 10-15 minutes, please reach out and we can arrange a make up class after the session is finished.

Supply List
The students will need the following:
* Sculpy or Fimo clay in a variety of colors, colors are subjective, and it is up to each learner what color they want to use for their creation.
* Basic clay tools. In the absence of the tools, a toothpick, or a large plastic sewing needle will work for most things.
* Something to safely slice the clay with. It needs to be relatively thin. I often use a metal bookmark I bought as a souvenir, in absence of that I have used an apple corer, or even a thin metal ruler. However, there are tools available for cutting clay.

I am happy to provide links or photos of the materials upon request.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
