Welcome scientists! These experiments are so fun, your kids will eat them up; LITERALLY!!! Teaching kids about science is especially exciting when they get to EAT the results! Let your child fuel their curiosity through a series of hands-on STEM/STEAM investigations that are safe to eat. In this multi-day course, students will explore the world of chemical reactions! Students will learn the scientific method which includes how to make observations, form a hypothesis, conduct an experiment,...
Students will be able to identify and demonstrate the scientific method, follow given steps to conduct their own experiments and understand why (the science behind chemical reactions).
1 file available upon enrollment✔️ Week 1- Taste the rainbow! 🍭 • 3 boxes or packs of Skittles or M&M’s (Assorted colors) *You may substitute the candy with something similar, but make sure it is dark in color.* • 3 dinner sized white or light colored plates (Try to use plain plates with no patterns on them.) • 1 toothpick • 2 cups HOT water • 1 cup white vinegar • Paper towel or hand towel • 1 curious kid =) ✔️ Week 2- Candylicious bubbles 🍬 • 1 microwave • 2 *METAL* straws or HARD plastic straws (Traditional soft plastic or paper straws will not work.) • *UNWRAP* 10 pieces of Starburst (Alternatives: Hi-Chew, Mamba or any FRUIT CHEW type of candy) • *UNWRAP* 10 pieces of Jolly ranchers (or any HARD candy just like Jolly ranchers) • 2 small MICROWAVABLE bowls • 1 tray or plate • 1 curious kid =) ✔️ Week 3- Volcanic Lemonade & Orange Juice 🧃 • ½ cup juice of FRESHLY SQUEEZED lemons (kindly have this done *before* class & ensure it's not too thick from the pulp) • ½ cup juice of FRESHLY SQUEEZED oranges (kindly have this done *before* class & ensure it's not too thick from the pulp) • 2 CLEAR cups/glasses or jars • 1 spoon • 1/8 measuring spoon • Baking SODA • 2 tablespoons of sugar (any type) • 1 tray or plate • Hand towels or paper towels • 1 curious kid =) ✔️ Week 4- I scream, You Scream, We all scream for ICE CREAM! 🍦 • 1 cup half-and-half (Alternative: whole milk) • 2 tbsp. sugar (any type) • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 3 cups ice or 1 tray cubes (already out of the tray & kept in freezer until we need it.) • 1/3 cup salt ***Please have the half & half, sugar, vanilla extract, salt and ice premeasured.*** • 1 large Ziploc bag • 1 small Ziploc bag (sandwich size) • 1 hand towel • 1 spoon • Any ice-cream toppings your child likes (sprinkles, syrup, candy, chocolate chips, etc) • 1 curious kid =) ***Please read the ingredients we will be using in each class to ensure your child can taste their experiments. However, your learner DOES NOT have to taste it if they or you don't want them to. That way, they can still conduct all experiments.*** Kindly note that if you do not have the supplies, students are still allowed to join the class and merely follow along. That way, they can still learn the process of how to make it and they can also conduct this experiment after class. A little grownup assistance required for some of this class. Additionally, the file is merely a welcome picture. NO file is needed for class.
The teacher will ask comprehension questions to check for understanding and use the experiments as a form of assessment.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Assist your child if needed with the experiments such as pouring or mixing ingredients. We’ll need your help for one class with the microwave. ***Please read the ingredients we are using to ensure your child can consume it.***
