Class Experience

This class will explore an introduction to screenwriting and will be a combination of learners writing their own screenplays and discussing with me or the class at large their ideas about the plot based on the weekly theme. Every learner will leave this course with the basics of screenwriting including formatting and patterns to making the basic screenplay film. By the end of the course, as long as the learner does their assigned work, each learner will finish the course with a 50-100 page screenplay.
I will teach this course by posting Mondays with a short video discussing the week's themes and allowing for discussing questions along the way via the classroom chat. Each week on Tuesdays (to allow for a full week to do assignments), learners will "turn in" the assignment from the week before for critique (a light critique just to make sure that students are following the formatting rules and expressing ideas clearly on the page for the transition to the screen). A short video will be sent to the learner via messages to discuss comments as well as written feedback. I will be available via the class chat through OutSchool and via email as well and, if needed, set up office hours over Zoom for additional work as "tutoring" of sorts. This class will require learners to write screenplays on either Microsoft Word or Google docs and be able to post documents in the classroom weekly. Learners will also read each other's screenplays and comment on work in an encouraging way!
The weekly themes are as follows:
Week 1- Brainstorming and Coming Up With Ideas For Screenplays; Introductions
Week 2- The First 5-10: Introducing Your Protagonist
Week 3- Focus On the Problem (Introducing Conflict)
Week 4-Throwing Up Barriers (Introducing Obstacles)
Week 5- Why Do We Care? (Laying Out the Stakes)
Week 6- Let's Make A Plan (Tactics- How Is Your Protagonist Getting Out of This?)
Week 7- Giving It Our Best Shot (Your Protagonist's Last Ditch Effort)
Week 8- The Last Piece ("Make Or Break" Your Story. Is the problem getting solved? Let's finish this!) *FINISHED SCREENPLAYS DUE THIS WEEK WITH ASSESSMENTS OF INDIVIDUAL SCREENPLAYS TO BE DELIVERED VIA EMAIL WITHIN 1 WEEK OF TURNING IT IN.*

Hello everyone! My name is Abbie! I finished my master's degree in library science from Drexel University in September 2023; I also hold a BA in English and journalism from the University of Delaware; some of my favorite coursework outside of my major were classes in other forms of writing, literature, art history, performing arts, and social sciences. When I am not in class, you can find me reading anything I can get my hands on and watching LOTS of Netflix. I look forward to talking to you all more!
