1-2 hours per week. Students will be expected to begin working on their own screenplay after the second class and will be expected to read other students' written pages so that we can discuss them at the next class meeting. Students will be asked to watch films and/or do small readings throughout the course.Assessment
Students will share their written pages with Mr. Conway and students in the class. We will work as a group to help all students produce their best work.Class Experience
Could your child be the next Academy Award-winning screenwriter? Intro to Screenwriting will cover screenwriting basics, including story structure, necessary components, and proper formatting. What makes a great hook? What must be accomplished in Act I, Act II, and Act III? How do I make dialogue believable? Students will watch clips, compare them to excerpts from screenplays, and learn how to outline and "break-down" a film's structure. Furthermore, they will learn how to operate a free screenwriting word processor so they do not have to use a clunky template in Microsoft Word! Students will begin writing their own screenplay in this course and will have a chance to workshop their ideas with other students. Students will be expected to show up to class ready to talk about their ideas, share some of their pages, read other students' work, and discuss their classmate's ideas with empathy and respect. Two weeks is not enough time to write a full screenplay, but students will be pushed to write as much as possible and leave with the tools they need to continue working. Week 1: - Intro to Screenwriting Format Part 1 - Beginning to Write, Constructive Criticism, & Student Work Roundtable Week 2: - Film Responses & Student Work Roundtable Week 3: - Film Analysis, Structure Review & Student Work Roundtable Week 4: - Film Analysis & Student Work Roundtable Week 5: - Film Analysis, Genre Review & Student Work Roundtable Week 6: - Film Analysis, Effective Endings & Student Work Roundtable Week 7: - Film Analysis, Effective Endings & Student Work Reviews Week 8: - Students Present Final Works & Readings
