What's included
1 live meeting
25 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
In this ongoing class, students will learn a new element of coding each week using the website, Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/)! Students will learn quick and simple codes, like animating your name, making a character jump, coding a bat flying across the screen, and more! The possibilities are endless. This class is designed for students that are familiar with coding, but still want to learn some basic commands to create a fun and exciting animation or game! This class does not require a Scratch login, but if you sign in, that's ok. Since this is an ongoing class, students will be working with a blank slate each week. We are not building on the current week, so we are leaving no one behind. :) Week of November 28: Animate Your Name! This first week we will learn how to make our name come to life! We can make our name move, get bigger, then smaller... Anything you can think of! Week of December 5: Glide Around. This week we will work with animals that know how to fly. You can even make your character fly, if you want. Week of December 12: Animate a Character. Make your character come to life by having it dance around or run! Week of December 19: Change character size and costume. Who says an elephant has to be bigger than a dog? You make the rules on the size of your creatures. **No class on December 21, 2022** Week of January 2: Make flying objects/animals fly. Code your sprites to fly off into the sunset or code your character throwing a bowl of pasta across the room. Week of January 9: Make Music. Have you ever wanted to play an instrument? This week we will be learning how to code our own music. Week of January 16: Let's play a MAGIC TRICK! Make your sprite disappear! Let's start coding! It is imperative that students work with two devices: one for watching my computer to show them how to code and one for coding on their own. It is very difficult and almost impossible to code on the same screen as the class. A tablet works best for watching my screen and a desktop works best to create the game, but both are interchangeable.
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to the fun and exciting website, Scratch! They will learn how to code a little bit at a time.
Other Details
Parental Guidance

Supply List
Two computer devices are necessary for this class. One to view the class code and one to code on your own. Tablets, laptops, PCs, etc. are perfect.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, everyone! Welcome to Outschool.
My name is Kim Spicer and I am a certified elementary school teacher, former actor, and a mom to a teenager. I have a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Before teaching, I was an actor in New York. I gained a Studio Theatre Acting Certificate from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, NY. I have been teaching for over 11 years, 5 of those years of which were STEM. During this time, I created my own curriculum for students based on the standards from the classroom. This year I am teaching the gifted and talented students. This has been such a great experience for me, because I get to combine my multi-faceted backgrounds such as STEM, acting, etc.
I have created a teaching style that is fun and energetic, while also educational. By molding my love for teaching and acting together, I keep the kids fully engaged the entire time! We always have so much fun! Students leave my classroom with a smile on their faces and more knowledge about science, engineering, coding, a sense of self, and more confidence.
I look forward to meeting you all and having some fun while learning!
