The majority of teachers offer coding classes to ages 8 and above. I feel coding can be taught to younger learners with patience, encouragement, and engagement. This is one of the very few classes designed for grades K-3. My style of teaching is very interactive and engaging. Each student will be able to share and express themselves as they feel comfortable. This is an introductory class exposing young learners to Scratch Jr. In this introductory lesson, coders create a silly dance for...
Great teachers form strong relationships with their students by engaging them in the subjects they are passionate about. I have always been a logical thinker who enjoys science, math, technology, and engineering both for work and play. I worked as an engineer for companies like Frito-Lay, Anheuser-Busch, Amgen as a consultant for many years improving their systems with automation and equipment. Once I became a parent, I began teaching extra-curricular classes as a way to have more time at home, but stay involved in subjects that bring me joy. Realizing that by being warm, professional, and enthusiastic, I am able to engage students. My creative lessons and strong classroom presence help build student confidence while increasing interest in subjects that may otherwise seem intimidating.
Children will be encouraged to explore coding on their own.
It is strongly encouraged to have two devices. One device for Zoom (laptop, desktop computer, smartphone or tablet) and a second device for coding (tablet or chromebook only). **KINDLE WILL NOT WORK** PLEASE NO SMARTPHONES. While you may be able to download the app, it is less than ideal and students become frustrated. iOS devices: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/scratchjr/id895485086?ls=1 Android Tablets: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.scratchjr.android If confident using a mouse, students may use Chromebook: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/scratchjr/oipimoeophamdcmjcfameoojlbhbgjda?hl=en Computer: https://jfo8000.github.io/ScratchJr-Desktop/ *********Students should have a basic understanding of the ScratchJr interface prior to joining. ************************************* Consider taking the Intro class prior to joining: https://outschool.com/classes/intro-to-scratchjr-coding-for-kindergarten-through-3rd-grade-xi3U5lV4
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Younger students may need parental support in order to complete tasks. Your child does NOT need to know how to read in order to participate.
