This course is a must for young kids that want to learn about technology and coding with the support of peers and a small group environment as well as have fun engaging in dynamic content. Your Kids Will: - Get to play while also learning about logic, sequential thinking, and the basics of computer programming - Expand their creativity and problem solving skills by learning, making and reiterating - Develop social emotional skills such as self-management - Use projects to practice and showcase their learning - Be part of our community where they will feel included, supported, and engaged, even online Social Emotional Learning Topics: Purpose and Self-Management Lesson 1: Introduction to Scratch Jr. and social emotional learning Lesson 2: Explore the Playground: Movement Blocks, Reset Button Lesson 3: Cartwheels and Hop to the Spot: Backgrounds, Triggering Block Lesson 4: Sharks and Minnows: New Characters, Triggering Block Lesson 5: Hokey Pokey: Recording Sound, Wait Block, Speed Block
Learning Goals
Kids will learn basic coding concepts and will have fun using their imaginations to play with and design their own playground games. This course combines learning and play in a brilliant way, so students have fun while learning 21st century skills like algorithmic sequencing and coding concepts like motion, repeat, sound, and control blocks.
They will learn to work through problems with the support of social emotional learning and a focus on Purpose and Self-Management.
Kids will get the chance to share their projects with their classmates and get feedback to help build a sense of community, even in a virtual world.Other Details
Supply List
Learners will need to install Scratch Jr. (via the links provided depending on your device) prior to the first class. The instructor will be using Chrome to share with students, so this is the recommended extension if available to your learner. Parents will need to help learners with how to share their screen in Zoom and use the mute and start video buttons during our first class or prior to class to help each learner be successful. Kelley has been a Build a Robot instructor since its founding. Kelley grew up in Columbus, Indiana. She did her undergraduate and graduate work at Indiana University-Bloomington. Then she lived and worked in Indiana and Florida before moving to Colorado in 2010. Kelley is a Speech Language Pathologist at a K-8 school. She has been teaching robotics after school programs and STEM summer camps for three years. She loves helping students build their confidence in speaking and learning. Reviews
