Assessment
In this class, assessments will primarily consist of personal assessments conducted by the teacher through observation of students during class sessions. These assessments serve to gauge each student's understanding, progress, and engagement with the material covered. Various types of assessments, such as coding exercises, project presentations, and participation in discussions, may be offered periodically to provide a comprehensive evaluation of students' learning. Assessments will typically be conducted in class to ensure real-time feedback and interaction. While participation in assessments is highly encouraged for all students to track their development and receive tailored support, they are not mandatory. However, engaging in assessments offers valuable insights and opportunities for growth, making them a beneficial aspect of the learning experience.

It is possible to join this club without the Intro class IF an ADULT is nearby to help assist the student in the first few classes.

This weekly club is a project-based coding club for young coders to share and express themselves as they feel comfortable with their knowledge of ScratchJr. Billed the Sunday before class. Withdraw anytime.

Each week a new project or programming concept will be explored to build the student's confidence with coding in Scratch Jr. Each student will be able to share their own programming ideas with the group to achieve the project objective as time allows.

💻ScratchJr utilizes block programming to allow children to create their own imaginative stories and games. It is a free app available on iPads, Android tablets, and Chromebooks. More FAQs are available here: https://www.scratchjr.org/about/faq

TEACHER POLICY
My style of teaching is very patient, and engaging and I provide a safe place for all my students to be themselves. I will do my best to ensure they meet their goals and feel confident with their skills. I will repeat myself several times and demonstrate what we are working on before a student does it themselves.

To be fair to ALL students, any student who arrives at class WITHOUT the software installed OR is more than 5 minutes late will be asked to watch the class and not code during class time. The class recording will be available to follow along and code outside of class time. If a student is struggling outside of class time with a project, I am available to help them if you send me a message with details of what is happening. It is my goal that you have the best overall experience possible. This policy is in place to ensure that for ALL students in class.

At this age, students are excited to share about themselves, lost teeth, family visiting, or new pets. I will manage class time to the best of my abilities, but I will NOT dampen a student's enthusiasm for sharing with peers. I will allow them to share briefly, which may lead to other students sharing as well. I will do my best to keep students on track, but each class group is unique and may run over by 5-15 minutes depending on the skills of the student, level of engagement, social sharing, and technical difficulties. I choose to lead my classes in a manner that elevates the child and builds their skills in coding, logical thinking, and social activities.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of programming logic, as well as, develop programs with sequences and simple loops, to express ideas or address a problem. Develop plans that describe a program’s sequence of events, goals, and expected outcomes. Identify and fix errors using a systematic process. Using correct terminology, describe steps taken, and choices made during the iterative process of program development. Create several computational artifacts for practical intent, personal expression, or to address a societal issue.

Parental Guidance
Younger students may need parental support in order to complete tasks. Your child does NOT need to know how to read in order to participate. An app will need to be installed on your device in order to have the coding software. You can read the privacy policy here: https://www.scratchjr.org/privacy
Supply List
It is strongly encouraged to have two devices. One device for Zoom (laptop, desktop computer, smartphone or tablet) and a second device for coding (tablet or chromebook only).

**KINDLE WILL NOT WORK**
PLEASE NO SMARTPHONES. While you may be able to download the app, it is less than ideal and students become frustrated.

Great teachers form strong relationships with their students by engaging them in the subjects they are passionate about. I have always been a logical thinker who enjoys science, math, technology, and engineering both for work and play.

I worked as an engineer for companies like Frito-Lay, Anheuser-Busch, Amgen as a consultant for many years improving their systems with automation and equipment. Once I became a parent, I began teaching extra-curricular classes as a way to have more time at home, but stay involved in subjects that bring me joy.

Realizing that by being warm, professional, and enthusiastic, I am able to engage students. My creative lessons and strong classroom presence help build student confidence while increasing interest in subjects that may otherwise seem intimidating.
