Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
Welcome to the Scratch Creative Coding Club, where creativity meets code! In this fun, weekly class, learners will dive deeper into game development by coding exciting projects like platformers, arcades, AI games, and interactive animations using Scratch, a user-friendly coding platform developed by MIT.

What will be taught?
Students will learn advanced Scratch concepts such as:
- Events and Commands: Learn to instruct computer.
- Variables and Lists: Track and store game data.
- Loops and Conditionals: Control the flow of their game logic.
- AI Applications: Program AI elements to compete with the player.
- STEM Applications: Replicate real-life phenomenons and understand STEM concepts via game-based learning.
- Interactive Animations: Bring their game characters and environments to life.

Class Structure:
Each class will introduce a new coding concept, guiding students through hands-on projects where they’ll build games piece by piece. We’ll use slides, live coding demonstrations, and peer discussions to reinforce the learning. Games will vary from shorter projects completed in a week to larger, more complex games that span multiple weeks.

Teaching Style:
This class emphasizes engagement and interaction. Students will code along with the instructor in real time, ask questions, share their creations, and troubleshoot problems as a group. There will be time for individual creativity, allowing learners to put their own spin on each project.

Collaboration and Fun:
The club fosters a collaborative atmosphere where students can team up, share ideas, and even remix each other's projects! It's more than just coding—students will develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and learn how coding applies to real-world STEM and AI applications.

Each session will end with a discussion of real-world applications of the concepts learned, such as game development, robotics, and animation.

Class Logistics:
- Device Requirement: Students are suggested to keep two devices—one for coding and another for Zoom, so they can follow along while programming on Scratch.

- Suitable Age: Best for kids aged 7 and above. Younger students may need some adult support.

Students will walk away not just with new coding skills but with exciting, custom-built games and a deeper understanding of how to use code to solve real-world challenges. Let’s code, create, and have fun!

Learning Goals

Master Foundational Coding Concepts: Understand and apply variables, loops, and conditionals to control game logic and build interactive elements.
Develop Game Design Skills: Create and customize platformers, AI-based games, and animations using Scratch's coding tools.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class uses Scratch, a kid-friendly platform developed by MIT, for creating games and animations. There is no content that is upsetting or scary for learners. However, parental supervision may be needed for younger learners (below age 8) to manage technical issues, such as setting up a Scratch account or handling two devices (one for coding and one for Zoom). Scratch is a safe, educational platform, but parents should ensure their child has an active account before the first class.
Supply List
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
