Welcome to the Scratch Coding Lab: Journey to Coding Mastery! In this exhilarating class, students embark on a thrilling coding adventure as they journey through the levels of mastery in Scratch coding. Each session of this bi-weekly program presents students with a new project, allowing them to practice and refine their coding skills. As students complete each project, they earn experience points (EXP) and progress through the levels of our epic leveling system, earning prestigious titles and certificates along the way. Late enrollments are encouraged as students continuously practice and reinforce their advanced coding skills each week, exploring diverse approaches to solidify their understanding and mastery of Scratch coding. Topics Covered: Block-based coding: Mastering the fundamentals of coding through Scratch's visual programming language. Sprite manipulation: Understanding how to create, animate, and control sprites to design dynamic projects. User interaction: Implementing user input mechanisms such as keyboard controls and mouse clicks to create interactive experiences. Conditional statements: Learning how to use if-else statements to add decision-making logic to projects. Variables and data: Exploring the concept of variables and how they can be used to store and manipulate data within Scratch projects. Creative problem-solving: Applying coding skills to creatively solve challenges and bring imaginative ideas to life. Level-Up System: Students begin their journey as Apprentice Coders upon joining the Scratch Coding Lab. By completing projects and earning experience points (EXP), students progress through the levels of our exciting leveling system: Apprentice Coder (Level 1) Scribe Coder (Level 2) Journeyman Coder (Level 3) Enchanter Coder (Level 4) Spellbinder Coder (Level 5) Archmage Coder (Level 6) Grandmaster Coder (Level 7) Sorcerer Supreme Coder (Level 8) Students' Progression: As students successfully complete projects and accumulate EXP, they unlock new levels, gaining recognition and prestige as they ascend the ranks of coding mastery. At each level, students receive a certificate celebrating their achievement and showcasing their progression in Scratch coding skills. Join us on this epic journey to coding mastery in the Scratch Coding Lab, where adventure and achievement await at every level!
Learning Goals
Advanced Sprite Manipulation: Students will demonstrate proficiency in designing and animating complex sprites using advanced techniques such as costume changes, sprite cloning, and custom movement paths.
Interactive Game Development: Students will design and create interactive games with advanced gameplay mechanics, including scoring systems, level progression, and user interfaces.
Complex Scripting: Students will develop advanced coding skills by creating complex scripts using variables, lists, and custom blocks to implement sophisticated behaviors and game mechanics.
Multimedia Integration: Students will integrate multimedia elements such as sound effects, background music, and video clips into their Scratch projects to enhance interactivity and immersion.
Creative Problem-Solving: Students will apply creative problem-solving strategies to overcome coding challenges and implement innovative solutions in their projects.
Debugging and Troubleshooting: Students will develop proficiency in debugging and troubleshooting techniques to identify and resolve coding errors and issues in their projects.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
As a parent, I encourage you to support and supervise your child's exploration of Scratch coding. In addition to coding, your child may also need to search Google for images to download and upload to Scratch projects. While this can be an enriching part of the creative process, it's important to guide your child in using safe and appropriate images. I recommend discussing the importance of respecting copyright laws and selecting images that are suitable for their projects.
Furthermore, your child may also explore using background remover tools online to remove backgrounds from images and create PNG images for their projects. While these tools can enhance creativity, it's essential to ensure that your child understands how to use them safely and responsibly. I recommend supervising their use of such tools and discussing the importance of respecting privacy and using images ethically.
By actively engaging with your child and providing guidance in these areas, you can help them navigate the digital world responsibly while fostering their creativity and learning in Scratch coding.
Pre-Requisites
Should have a basic knowledge of the Scratch User Interface and blocks found on the block palette.
Supply List
It is preferable and highly recommended to have 2 screens. If that is not possible, a working knowledge of how to navigate from one window to another will be sufficient.
