Description

Class Experience

Students will be able to use code blocks in Scratch to create simple projects.
I have been a UK teacher for over 18 years and have worked on Outschool for more than 1 year. Whilst working in brick & mortar schools, I was the school lead for Computing and Information Technology. I have been teaching Scratch for 15 years (suddenly feeling old!).
Not applicable
Tech A laptop or desktop computer with a medium to large screen size is best for these lessons. We use the online version of Scratch https://scratch.mit.edu/ Tablets and phones are not suitable since the code blocks can be too small to see and children will need to access two programs (Zoom and Scratch) throughout the lesson. It is also helpful to have an adult on hand during the set up. Children who can access two devices are able to watch the lesson on Zoom whilst working on another device within Scratch. I am able to access their work, debug, share their great ideas etc through the Teacher Classroom. Account Set-Up As a qualified teacher, I am using a Scratch Teacher classroom which is safer than logging in to the usual community and also has the ability to share work within the classroom. If your child has their own Scratch account already they will not be able to use this to enter my course classroom or share projects with other class members. Please record your password as you will need it to sign in. On sign-up you will find an Outschool Classroom welcome message with the sign-up link to this private classroom. Please support your child PRIOR TO THE LESSON to create their account using this sign up link. You'll need their birth date and month, gender and country. I am happy to support you through this process via messages before the lesson, or via an office hours call. Please just get in touch. If your child has their own Scratch account already they will not be able to use this to enter my classroom or share projects with other class members. Access Out of Class Your child will be able to enter the classroom 'out of hours' to work on their projects using their class accounts and own password. Children can share projects with other class members within a Class Studio. I am also able to access these projects to debug, share good ideas with the class and review our work Lost Passwords The great thing about a teacher account is that I am able to reset passwords that are lost, so you don't lose your work as well!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
