Beginner Level
🤖 Welcome to the Scratch Beginner Class! Where your child can code their own AI Chat Bot 🤖 ======================================================= According to research, coding can help improve your child's understanding of logic and mathematics. In this class, we will code a new game each week. Your child will learn to design games, write code, and debug errors. Students will transform from beginners to expert coders in this five week flex class! 🌟 There are NO live meetings in this class! Your student can message the teacher with questions at any time ✅ 💻 At the start of each week, students will access: -A video lesson where the student will learn how to create a video game using step by step instructions while also learning basic programming concepts as they are applied to the project in motion. -This class is project based with a big emphasis in learning programming concepts. -A weekly quiz covering the coding concepts used in the video game of the week. -Students will publish their completed game for evaluation by the teacher. -All projects, worksheets, and discussion posts for the prior week will be due by Sunday at 8:00pm EST -Students will receive weekly feedback from the teacher. -Students may ask questions and interact with each other and the teacher, via the comment feature in the Outschool classroom. The teacher is available at all times, and may answer within 24 hours. Lesson plan can be found under the syllabus section. Students may also post the links to their Scratch projects in our virtual classroom for feedback from teachers and classmates. 📖 After completing this course weeks, our students: ✅ Understand the use of loops. ✅ Use if and sensing blocks to reach a goal. ✅ Create pictures in Scratch. ✅ Debug a coding sequence that has missing or wrong blocks in the sequence, at the beginner level. ✅ Use creativity to create backgrounds and sprites.
Learning Goals
At the end of this five week course, students will be able to:
-Log into the Scratch platform and create a user ID and password to save their game.
-Know what is Scratch and how to code using blocks.
-Know how to use backgrounds, costumes, and sprites.
-Know how and when to use if/then conditional blocks, loops, and variables.
-Know how to use the sensing, sounds, and operator blocks.
-Create their own video game on Scratch.
-Cooperate with other students to provide constructive feedback.
Syllabus
5 Lessons
over 5 WeeksLesson 1:
Welcome to Your First Coding Lesson.
This week, you will be making a fully working drawing game to help you get to now the Scratch platform and how to use blocks.
Lesson 2:
Coding with Conditionals
This week, you will be making a falling object game that uses conditionals.
Lesson 3:
Adding Score and a Timer
This week, you will be making a fish clicker game as you learn how to add additional elements to your game.
Lesson 4:
Drawing a Sprite
This week, you will be learning how to design a sprite that you can customize and use for your games.

Parental Guidance
✅ Learners will need to open at free account the Scratch coding platform before their first class by going to Scratch.mit.edu
✅ We strongly recommend that parents make sure that commenting in projects is turned off by going to each project and clicking the off button for comments found to the bottom right hand side of the project page.

Lauren Smith is a certified teacher in exceptional student education with a Masters in Instructional Design and specializations in reading, and English for speakers of other languages, as well as students with autism in grades K-12. She is also certified in education from birth through four years old and is a certified teacher of the gifted for grades K-12.
Having had the privilege of working with students across various age groups and cultural backgrounds, Lauren has taught coding, reading, and mathematics to elementary, middle, and high school children from around the world. Her enthusiasm for both general and special education settings is palpable, and she currently teaches 5th grade at a public school in Hollywood, FL in the United States of America.
Beyond the classroom, Lauren is a mother of three, ages nine, twelve, and sixteen. Her personal experience as a parent, especially to a child with special needs, fuels her passion for inclusive education. Lauren's teaching philosophy centers around the belief in a growth mindset, asserting that, with the right tools, children can master any concept and achieve expertise from a young age.
In her coding classes, Lauren seamlessly integrates math and coding concepts, empowering students to create their own video games and animations through computer code while organically learning mathematical principles. Her joy lies in witnessing her students' faces light up as they discover the possibilities of their newfound knowledge.
As an avid reader herself, Lauren endeavors to instill a love for reading in her students and her own children. Her favorite children's books, ranging from "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio to the "Percy Jackson Series" by Rick Riordan, reflect her diverse literary tastes. Parents often seek her recommendations for captivating reads for children of all ages.
As a bilingual teacher fluent in Spanish, her native language, Lauren enjoys connecting with people from different corners of the globe and delights in practicing basic greetings in various languages. With a dream to travel the world with her family, Lauren Smith continues to inspire, nurture, and celebrate the joy of learning in every student she encounters.

He codes on Scratch, HTML, and Python. He has also worked in the broadcasting industry in post production for over 20 years. Mr. Smith is excited to be a part of this amazing team of teachers whose goal is to create a learning environment where kids feel comfortable with making mistakes as they learn. Mr. Smith’s goal is to teach children coding in a fun and laid back environment.

Alberto Rodriguez, our teen Spanish teacher, is a native of Venezuela. He has been living in the United States for over 30 years and worked in the public school system for over 15 years. He aims to teach teens words and phrases in Spanish that they can use in their every day lives. He also knows the importance of learning grammar rules when learning a new language, so he teaches the correct way to write and read Spanish in his classes. Sr. Rodriguez is retired and now lives with his wife in the beautiful and sunny State of Florida.
