What's included

This course is designed to introduce kids ages 11-14 to the historical topic of the Age of Imperialism. I will use Google Slides to introduce & review the meaning of Imperialism, explain European influences in Asia and Africa, and discuss various rebellions and wars that took place in colonized regions. I will break the lesson into 5 parts in order to address the following topics: British colonization of India & the Sepoy Rebellion; European spheres of influence in China, the Opium Wars & Boxer Rebellion; westernization of Japan & the Meiji Restoration; Scramble for Africa & the Zulu Wars of South Africa. The colonized peoples perspectives of colonialism/imperialism will be taught using the rebellions listed as how they fought against their oppressors, as well as using several primary sources (photographs, readings) to highlight the detrimental effects of this period of history on the natives. These sources included various political cartoons, material culture advertisements, and maps that will be addressed and analyzed for their portrayals of racism and discrimination during this era of colonization. The discussion of native rebellions will be addressed in such a way to illuminate the multiple perspectives that colonization had on the people it affected within Asia and Africa (Example: why and how the Indian Sepoys chose to rise up against their British oppressors). The lesson information that I have created for this class is researched from the following sources: "McGraw Hill Textbook - Contemporary Cultures in History (1600 to the Present)"; "Everything You Need to Ace World History (Big Fat Notebook)" by Workman Publishing; "The Scramble for Africa" by Charles River Editors. The class will last an hour with time built in for discussion and review of the topics with students. Students may answer or ask questions verbally or via chat box on Zoom.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to analyze how industrialization & nationalism contributed to European & American imperialism into Asia and Africa, the resulting rebellions that occurred, and the legacy of racial discrimination that developed within societies.
