Assessment
I will post some questions about the experiments and expected results in the nearpod presentation but also we will engage in discussions through the Outschool classroom. The follow up with questions about the experiment will help them build a strong understanding of the experiments. The class will overall help the students to start establishing a scientific reasoning base.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
During this FLEX (no live meetings) class students will learn about a science through a series of hands on experiments. The experiments will help the students better understand the science behind them since they will watch first hand the results. Be ready to get a little messy and have some fun. I highly recommend parent supervision for the class at all times. The class consists of four presentations, one each week, that I share through nearpod (no registration required). The presentations are easy to follow with detailed step-by-step instructions and helpful photos and videos. This a four week flex class (meaning there will be no live meetings).

The experiments will come in a slide presentation with the list of all necessary ingredients and materials. I use Nearpod for a more interactive class. The students will have a series of activities to complete during and at the end of each presentation. After each class, I will follow up with questions and we will post the results of our experiments in the Outschool classroom for discussion with the teacher and among the students. All questions, photos, and comments will be shared throughout the week using the Outschool classroom page for discussions. I will also be available via email to answer questions and troubleshoot.

The materials and ingredients required for every experiment will be posted the week before in the classroom.

Here there is a list of the experiments we will do every week:
Week 1: Density gradient (we will learn about what is density and how it affects us)
Week 2: Icy orbs (we will learn about the chemical reaction that helps de-icing roads in the winter)
Week 3: Invisible ink (we will learn to speed up time using heat and lemon juice)*
Week 4: Erupting volcano (we will learn about the chemical reactions that take place in lava)
*Requires the use of an oven, therefore parental supervision is strongly advised.

Please join me as we have fun and learn the way the world works!
Learning Goals
The goal is to have fun spending quality time with your family while we learn about science. Since your children will be having fun and enjoying what they are doing, they will be more likely to ask questions and listen to the answers. Also because they are very hands on experiments they will remember better and it will make more sense than just trying to understand sometimes complex phenomenons.

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Density Tower
During this experiment we will learn about density. What is it? Why is it important?
Lesson 2:
Icy Orbs
During this experiment we will introduce the concept of chemical reactions. What are they?
Lesson 3:
Invisible Ink
During this experiment we will about about another very different chemical reaction. What happened this time?
Lesson 4:
Volcano Eruption
For our last experiment we will take the concept of chemical reactions to another new explosive level. Ready?

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class is really for any age as long as there is parental supervision. I have made this experiments with my 2 and 4 year old and they loved them! Of course, the level of understanding of the science behind it will depend on the age, but I still share with them the reasons behind everything we do, since they all love to ask 'why'!
Supply List
Once you sign up for the class I will send you the list of materials you will need for each experiment. Most of the stuff you will need will be things that you already have at home, such as: duct tape, vegetable oil, plastic bottles, cardboard, etc. Nothing too fancy I promise! I like to use a lot of the stuff at home that we will end up throwing to the trash anyway to have fun with my girls.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I am a Biologist! I love science but more than that I love sharing my passion with my children and see how their eyes open widely when they understand how our bodies and the environment around them work. I would love for you to have the same kind experience with your children.
