Description
Class Experience
This will be a part lecture part discussion-based class on the scientific process. Students will learn by interacting with the teacher and with each other. We will begin with an introduction of the scientific process. We will discuss the general steps, including but not limited to, how to do background research, forming a hypothesis, designing an experiment, and collecting data. The specific topic we will focus on will be apple oxidation and the question we will ask will be, what works best...
Students will learn how the scientific process works, how to write about it, and how to communicate their findings.
PhD Candidate in Biomedical Science. I work in a lab as a scientist and have done my fair share of scientific writing! I am currently working on an NIH grant now. :)
Students will conduct the apple oxidation experiment at home. Afterwards, they will need to write an abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. There will be time in class for this. Students can work on the poster presentation as they write up each part. They can choose to create a physical poster or I will provide a template on PPT for them to use.
For the experiment: apples and liquids that may include water, apple juice, honey, lemonade, orange juice, etc. Option for physical poster: poster board, markers.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Poster presentation.
2 hours 20 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
