(Also good supplementary classes would include my volcano and Earth's Mag Field classes) Weekly Breakdown: Week 1: Astrobiology defined and what kind of life scientists expect to find Places to Search for life in our Solar System The size of our Solar System then compared to the Universe w/ pics and a video for reference End of class I will tell students about the "creating their own planet" projects Week 2: Numbers- How big are a million, billion, trillion Where we are located in our Universe The Habitability of Earth- Geology/Climate Week 3: Defining Life on Earth- 6 key properties Search for Life in our solar system Mars Week 4: Europa Ganymede Callisto Week 5: Titan Enceladus Triton Habitable Zones Week 6: Students will get to present their projects and I will ask them questions to check for class comprehension. Project Guidelines: Students will be creating their own planet and they can do so in any artistic manner they want. Including, but not limited to, painting, drawing, Legos, sculpting with foam balls, …etc. They will need to: Name the planet Describe 1) planet's terrain 2) where it gets it's heat source 3) does it have a liquid of some kind and where it is located 4) what kind of life is living on the planet
Learning Goals
Students will learn about how life on Earth survives, learn the size of our solar system and the Universe, and learn about the Habitability of Mars, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan, Enceladus, and Triton. They should leave the class with a new appreciation for our Universe and science in general.
