Class Experience

In this class, we will learn about the biology and life cycle of the Hellbender salamander. In addition, we will learn what the Hellbender has to teach us about osmosis, adaption, and ecosystems. You’ll even learn to calculate the survival rate of a clutch of Hellbender eggs!

We will conduct small scale simulation experiments to showcase what specific habitat a Hellbender looks for, as well as discuss what we can do to help protect them. This class combines discussions, exploration/experiments, googles slides, and short video clips.

The only prior knowledge needed for this course is curiosity for the natural world! We will discuss the meaning of the following vocabulary words in class for further understanding:

- Ecosystem
- Habitat
- Nocturnal
- Osmosis
- Adaption
- Life Cycle

Learning Goals

-Students will learn the basic definition of the following scientific words: ecosystem, habitat, osmosis, adaption, nocturnal, life cycle.
-Students will be able to mathematically calculate survival rate into a percentage
- Students will be able to identify biological characteristics of a Hellbender salamander (ex. Color, mucus secretion, diet, habitat, behavior).

Parental Guidance
- We will discuss the life-cycle of a Hellbender salamander. This may include the use of the words “mate” Or “reproduce” but will go no further in that direction.
