This is a preschool to kindergarten science focused class that explores the scientific process and understanding of specific weekly topics. We will also focus on the social interactions that children have with their peers, including sharing scientific vocabulary, questions, ideas, and observations. To establish a routine, will begin each class with a salutation, naming the day of the week, the date, and discussing the weather where we are. In this way the children will establish a relationship with each other and feel more comfortable exploring different, often unknown, topics with each other. We will use songs, true stories, slides, overhead viewed books, printed material, and experiments to deepen our understanding of our world. We will begin the first week exploring where we are on the planet. We will use a map to find our city, our state, our country, and our continent, and our planet. When we place ourselves in our environment we will have a deeper understanding of our classmates. Next we will begin to explore the weather where we live. This week will dive deeper into types of weather, how weather patterns form, and how we as humans deal with weather. We will print types of clouds cards and play a game with them those together, we will read books about extreme weather, and experiment creating rain in a glass. This week we will dive deeper into the water cycle and the three states of matter. We will use ice, water, and steam to understand both concepts. We will touch on different types of land and water formations, water conservation, and conduct a chemical experiment further our understanding of the three states of matter. As the weeks progress we will dive deeper into different Earth Sciences such as botany, zoology, geology, and entomology to name a few. As the children feel more concrete in their understanding of their Earth, the scientific process, and their relationships with each other, we will begin to explore the cosmos. The teacher will provide books, true stories, songs, and some after class activities. Using a Montessori pedagogy, this class will be very focused on the children’s understanding and assessment of understanding will be ongoing throughout each day and week. The teacher welcomes and encourages open communication with parents and caregivers.
Learning Goals
This class is made to encourage curiosity and understanding about Earth Sciences. Through an introduction to many topics, hands on exploration, and group conversations I hope to spark an interest and foundational understanding of sciences. We will also be focusing on community building, language immersion, small group activities, and self confidence. We develop a friendliness with error...

Parental Guidance
This is a secular class and we will be discussing all topics from a purely scientific standpoint. The children are encouraged to bring their own beliefs into the classroom, and that is a welcomed aspect of the community.
Supply List
Learners will be required to have a general supply of school supplies. Pencils, crayons, colored pencils, ruler, scissor, paper, and glue. We will not need them for every class but if your family has a small box to set some materials out with class. The teacher will specify each week what supplies will be needed. Families may have to print UP TO five pages of material a week. These and any other specific materials needed for the week will be provided early morning on Monday so that any new families joining the class can have access to the materials. I also understand that families may have difficulty acquiring materials and will give plenty of notice on the few days when we have to get a specific supply. The first week we will need maps of our city and/or state. While paper, even printed from the computer is easier, these can be digital on an ipad or phone. There is one file attached to be printed on Friday. If your family has a globe or compass these are great items to share with the community. The second week we will print a packet of cloud types and cut them out for class on Tuesday. We will also need a glass or jar, a plate, hot water, and ice for an experiment on Wednesday. Monday is a great day for children to bring their favorite weather related things to share with the class, books, sunglasses, or family photos are just a few examples. Later in the week we will use cotton balls, glue, and paper to create our own cloud map. The third week we will also need we will need a glass or jar, a plate, hot water, and ice for exploration. There will be a packet of land and water formations for the family to print for class on Tuesday. Wednesday we will need a tray of room temp water (9x13 cake pan), a blue ice cube, and red hot water. On Friday we will need a tray, such as 9x13 baking dish, a jar or container, 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup vinegar for a solid liquid gas experiment (optional food coloring). The fourth week we will need a soft boiled egg, a package of Mentos candy, a 16 oz bottle of diet soda, and several attachments for printing. Week five we will need salt dough (recipe will be sent on Monday) or store bought dough is fine, a glass bottle, a plastic or silicone straw, a container of digging substrate (soil, sand, or rice), and attachments for printing. Week six we will need several printed attachments, about 20 place markers for a guessing game (buttons, pennies, or small pebbles) and any materials that families would like to bring about zoology.
