Class Experience

This class is optimal for early learners that need a positive introduction to basic science concepts and skills.

I will start class by greeting all of the learners. I will then teach them a call and response song. We will then conduct an investigation to answer a science question of the day, like, "How many tablets does it take to make the cup overflow?" Learners will have the opportunity to practice their developing verbal skills by participating in a discussion about what they see happening in their reaction cup. I will close the class by leading the call and response song.

Please check the materials list below.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Who am I and what do I teach?
My name is Stephanie E. Farmer and I love teaching science. I've taught in public schools, early childhood education centers, and after-schools all around New York City.

What is my professional background?
I've been working with children since I was 12. In 2001 I graduated from UNM with a Biochemistry degree. After working as a laboratory scientist for several years I was invited to be the after school & summer camp director at a Harlem nonprofit. By the end of 2012, I had launched a nonprofit and became the science teacher for 300 students at a charter school in East Harlem. In 2014 I made the commitment to be the full-time Executive Director and visionary leader for my non-profit.

What are my core values and teaching philosophy?
I have 4 main values; respect, safety, learning, and fun. It is my vision that each child that participates in any of my classes will gain a scientific knowledge base, a sense of their own creativity, and self-respect. Every session touches on all 5 STEAM disciplines; Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math in a way that is both accessible and enjoyable for the youth of all ages. I enjoy teaching through hands-on activities to help children engage in the concepts and skills being taught. I aim towards the end goal of every child leaving my classes with the understanding that they are meant to do great things!

What are some fun facts about me?
I had amazing math and science teachers throughout junior high and high school. I was on several dance teams in college and I've released two independent albums.
