Class Experience

In this one-time class, we will explore characteristics of fungus and their essential role on our planet. Next, we will narrow the focus to Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, otherwise known as 'zombie-ant fungus' where we will learn its unique (and creepy!) impact on ants. We will use images and video clips to deepen our learning. At the end of the lesson, students will complete a quick draw of the fungus and then have the opportunity to either orally share or write what they learned. This will be an extremely interactive class where students will be able to share their thoughts and ask questions!

The structure of the class will be as follows:
2-3 minutes of introductions
25 minutes of material
7-8 minutes of review/drawing activity

Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Ms. Holly, and I am passionate about teaching! I have taught first grade in a public school setting for four years and then taught on Outschool for over a year! I am currently a stay-at-home mom. My vision for teaching is to instill a love of learning into every student and for them to know with confidence that they are valued and known.

As a child, my own curiosity for learning was sparked by an assortment of dinosaur toys, home science experiments, and field trips to the museum. This developed in me a desire to pursue science in the form of a BS in Biology from Texas A&M University. From there, I was called to become a teacher and received a MS degree in Education. I strive to meet learner's needs by including a variety of hands-on activities, movement, and student participation. I will also incorporate visuals, songs, and silly humor to engage students and help them to absorb the content.

When I am not teaching, I like to spend time with my husband of 9 years, my 3 year old bio son, and my 15 and 16 year old foster sons. I have a dog Jessie named after the character in Toy Story. I am interested in reading, crafting, crocheting, traveling, animals (especially sloths), Harry Potter, Disney, dinosaurs, and anything to do with science!

I am so pumped to meet your student! See you there!
