Is it a monster? An alien? A parasite? In this class, we will unpack the strange qualities of the Hydnora Africana, a plant that seems to be out of this world! We will begin by learning a few characteristics of ordinary plants such as chlorophyll, photosynthesis, and plant parts (leaves, stems, etc). Then we will discover that Hydnora contains none of these ordinary qualities of plant life! Instead, we will find out how the Hydnora survives without chlorophyll, why it has stinky yet delicious...
Students will discuss the typical characteristics of plants including stems, leaves, flowers, chlorophyll, and photosynthesis. Students will learn the strange characteristics of Hydnora African.
35 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
