Science Secrets: Masters of Disguise
What's included
1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class, we will discover shocking facts about different ways that animals use camouflage! We will discuss the following animals: king snake, leaf-tailed gecko, orb-web spider, orchid mantis, octopi, and the stonefish! Did you know that one of these animals disguises themselves as bird poop? Yuck! We will also learn about each animal's role in the ecosystem (predator vs. prey) along with other interesting facts. Next, we will play a game where we will view pictures of camouflaged animals. Students will be asked to find the hidden animal within a certain amount of time. We will end the class with a hands-on activity where students will 'hunt' for Skittles among a grouping of M&M's in order to model how challenging it is for predators to find camouflaged prey. Students will view both images and video clips to deepen their understanding. This will be an extremely interactive class where students will have opportunities to share their thoughts, ask questions, and participate in activities. The structure of the class will be as follows: 2-3 minutes of introduction 25-30 minutes of content 10 minutes of STEM activity 2-3 minutes of reflection

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Ms. Holly, and I am passionate about teaching! I have taught first grade in a public school setting for four years and then taught on Outschool for over a year! I am currently a stay-at-home mom. My vision for teaching is to instill a love of learning into every student and for them to know with confidence that they are valued and known.
As a child, my own curiosity for learning was sparked by an assortment of dinosaur toys, home science experiments, and field trips to the museum. This developed in me a desire to pursue science in the form of a BS in Biology from Texas A&M University. From there, I was called to become a teacher and received a MS degree in Education. I strive to meet learner's needs by including a variety of hands-on activities, movement, and student participation. I will also incorporate visuals, songs, and silly humor to engage students and help them to absorb the content.
When I am not teaching, I like to spend time with my husband of 9 years, my 3 year old bio son, and my 15 and 16 year old foster sons. I have a dog Jessie named after the character in Toy Story. I am interested in reading, crafting, crocheting, traveling, animals (especially sloths), Harry Potter, Disney, dinosaurs, and anything to do with science!
I am so pumped to meet your student! See you there!
