Beginner Level
This small group class aims to develop learners' scientific understanding, critical thinking, debating and critical analysis skills. Each session, we will engage in structured discussion around a scientific article, similar to those found in the news or popular science magazines. The article will be sent for students to read in advance and a few key paragraphs also read together at the start of each class. Depending on the exact topic, the class may include: - Learning more about the underlying science - Discussing the wider impacts/ implications of the topic on society - Engaging in short debates around trending STEM topics This ongoing class will continually adapt according to the latest STEM topics and there is no fixed curriculum, however I will try to ensure there is a good balance between different STEM subject areas, current events and countries. Learners are also highly encouraged to recommend articles and topics to discuss (please send me a message by the Friday before the class). This class may particularly suit students who love talking about STEM but would like to develop a broader awareness of STEM subjects while developing debating and reading skills. I also have a lot of learners with English as a second language taking this class, and this is a great opportunity to improve your English discussion skills and scientific English vocabulary in a more informal environment. My teaching style for this class is relatively structured yet flexible around the article and conversation. I will typically prepare a few slides with question prompts or useful scientific diagrams/ summaries to refer to, but the majority of the time will be spent engaging in discussions together. In terms of required prior knowledge, there are no strict requirements and all topics will be approached from a non-specialist perspective. Learners should be confident reading articles in English (articles will also be sent in advance of the class to assist learners who need some additional time or support). Students for whom English is an additional language or with special educational needs are always welcome in my classes, please do send me a message in advance if you require any additional support and I will be happy to help.
Learning Goals
Develop conversational and academic English reading comprehension and discussion skills
Engage in simple debates around trending science topics
Other Details
Learning Needs
This class is particularly popular with students for whom English is their second or additional language, or who need additional reading comprehension practice. Direct language instruction and support is provided. All learners welcome!
Parental Guidance
This class will involve discussing STEM topics, particularly those from recent news or events, so may occasionally lead into more political discussions and mention of potentially controversial topics (vaccination, animal testing, etc). Articles will be selected in an age-appropriate way and critically analysed from a neutral perspective to consider underlying scientific evidence, author bias, etc. with learners actively encouraged to discuss their opinions and constrictively critique their point of view. Note that while I will of course consider parents' requests, I will not censor topics based on religious or discriminatory objections.
Supply List
Students will be sent a news article to read before the class. This will usually be in the form of a PDF file (created by myself and written at a B1-B2 level of English), which can be read on the computer or printed before class. I will also provide a link to the original source article, for students with a more advanced English level or who would like to read more about the topic.
Language of Instruction
English (Level: B1)
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
We will refer to articles from a wide range of freely accessible internet-based sources - primarily reputable news websites and some STEM blogs / magazines. Sometimes, we may discuss an article from a less reputable source in order to critically analyse how the source of an article affects how it is written.
