US Grade 9 - 10
This course provides a great review for the grade 9/10 science curriculum (bio/chem units). We will start from introducing atom structure, elements, compounds, ions, isotopes, valence electrons, naming compounds, types of bonds. We will have a brief look on types of reactions, law of mass conservations, balancing and predicting chemical reactions. In the biology section we will explore carbon and nitrogen cycle, how human activities effect ecosystems. We will talk about ecological niche and tropic levels and energy transfer through the food chain. Students will be provided with practice questions and homework activities to facilitate learning process. I will teach using a white board, some short YouTube videos and slides. Frontal teaching will be followed by practice periods (worksheet uploaded for each session). Students are encouraged to share their answers and participate in discussions. Middle and high school students interested in science or willing to improve their knowledge are encouraged to sign up for this course. Course outline: Week 1- Atom structure, atomic number, atomic mass, electrons arrangement Week 2- periods, groups, valence electrons, ionic compounds, Lewis structure Week 3- rules for naming ionic compounds, molecular compounds (bonds, naming) Week 4 - polyatomic ions, practice naming compounds Week 5- conservation of the mass law, types of reactions (synthesis, decomposition) Week 6- types of reactions (single, double displacement) Week 7- practice for the chemistry unit Week 8- biology unit - biotic, abiotic, examples of ecosystems Week 9- photosynthesis, cellular respiration (basic word equations) Week 8-10 food chains, ecological pyramids, carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle biodiversity (kingdoms, domains, bacteria, virus) During the course students will have opportunities to present their projects, classroom participation is encouraged. I will be working with each student individually in breakout room to monitor student's progress. Welcome to my class!
