US Grade 9 - 10
This ongoing course provides a great foundation for the grade 9/10 science curriculum (bio/chem units). In the biology section, we will explore ecosystems and food chains. We will talk about ecological niche and tropic levels and energy transfer through the food chain. Next, we will spend time on the biodiversity unit, which is the variety of organisms on earth and the classification levels. Students will be provided with practice questions and homework activities to facilitate the learning process. Students will have an opportunity to present their work. In the Chemsitry unit, I will cover the concept of atom, element, and compound. We will practice how to balance chemical reaction and types of reactions. I will teach using a whiteboard, some short YouTube videos and worksheets. Frontal teaching will be followed by practice periods (worksheet uploaded for each session). Students are encouraged to share their answers and participate in discussions. Middle and high school students interested in science or willing to improve their knowledge are encouraged to sign up for this course. Course outline: Week 1 - biology unit - biotic, abiotic, examples of ecosystems Week 2- photosynthesis, cellular respiration (basic word equations) Week 3- food chains, ecological pyramids, Week 4- carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle Week 5- biodiversity, kingdoms of life Week 6- biodiversity, bacteria, viruses Week 7- biodiversity, plant kingdom, dichotomous key Week 1 Chemistry - Atom structure, atomic number, mass, periodic table Week 2 - periods, groups, valence electrons, ionic compounds, Lewis structure Week 3 - rules for naming compounds, molecular compounds, factors in the chemical reaction, conservation of the mass law Week 4 - learning check, synthesis reactions, predicting products of synthesis reactions Week 5 - decomposition reactions, predicting products, single displacement reactions Week 6 - double displacement, combustion, and neutralization reactions, review of the chemistry unit Welcome to my class!
