US Grade 4 - 6
This class is perfect for 4th-6th-grade learners. This class is designed for learners to have Science curriculum experience through homeschooling or after-school care. We will cover many topics within Science, such as Environmental, Space Science, Physical Science, Biology, and much more. We will explore Science through various experiments (please view the list below). This class follows a Science Curriculum that does not build on itself but allows students to continue to grow. Here are following standards that we will be following in our class: Topic: Matter and Its Interactions- Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen. Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties. Investigate to determine whether mixing two or more substances results in new substances. September 4th - Topic: Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions- Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down. September 11th - Topic: Energy Use models to describe energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and maintaining body warmth) was once energy from the sun. September 18th- Topic: From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms Energy and Matter September 25th- Topic: Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems Cycles of Matter and Energy Transfer in Ecosystems Systems and System Models October 2nd- Topic: Earth’s Place in the Universe Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. Earth and the Solar System The Universe and its Stars October 9th- Topic: Earth’s Systems Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact. Describe and graph the amounts and percentages of water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about water distribution on Earth. October 16th- Topic: Earth and Human Activity Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use scientific ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment. October 23rd- Topic: Engineering Design Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved. Each week we will meet in a live class setting, and students will have the opportunity to connect during learning. In this class, we will learn how to perform Science experiments safely, discuss with our peers, and learn scientific terminologies. To ensure that everyone is engaging with one another, we will play a Kahoot game at the end of each class. All of our Kahoot games will be a review of our weekly materials. (Parents and scientists will have access to Kahoot once enrolled in the class). Here is a list of supplies needed for this class (but not limited): Paper towels Food Dye Shaving Cream Salt Water Gummie Bears Coins 2 Eggs Ice Cotton balls Oranges Here’s a breakdown of our class (weeks are broken into modules): Please note that the weekly breakdown below, follows the weekly dates above. Week 1: Rain Cloud In a Jar *We will create a rain cloud in a jar. We will learn how rain clouds are formed and it affects our atmosphere. In this lesson, we will discover our atmosphere and weather development. Week 2: Gummie Growth * We will watch gummies bears shrink and grow in different variations of water. We will be able to draw a hypothesis before. This lesson will teach us how things transform in size and color. Week 3: Penny/Coin Cleaner * What are some ways that we can clean coins without using chemicals? In this lesson, we will learn how to clean a quarter and a penny using basic household things like ketchup, salt, water, vinegar, and juice. We will also look at the chemicals that cause our coins to become clean. Week 4/Module 4: Egg Float * In this lesson, we will learn why and how an egg can float. We will use distilled water, tap water, and salt water to perform this experiment. Week 5/Module 5: Fruits and Salt * We will see what happens to fruits when you leave them in salt and salt water. We will form a hypothesis to determine what will grow on the fruits. In this lesson, we will clean how crystals form. We will also look at how crystals affect the freshness of our fruits. We will be able to watch closely as it forms on our fruits. Week 6/Module 6: Salt on Ice * We will form a hypothesis about salt on ice. Students will be able to experiment and find out what truly happens when salt touches ice or snow. In this lesson, we will explain why salt causes ice to melt and dries it out. This class ends on Feb 28, 2022

Mrs. Berry-Cherry:
I began my career as an educator more than ten years ago by volunteering at the local enrichment program in my community. I went on to receive my Bachelor's Degree and Masters's Degree. Soon after college, I founded my church's Camp Pyramid Summer Enrichment Reading Program and Pyramid Academy Learning Center. I taught third-grade and fourth-grade in PGCPS. I have a strong passion for connecting with learners through education.
Mrs. Moore:
Hello, my name is Julianna Moore, and I am an NJ State Certified teacher (K-6 th Grade). I have taught for many years and am now excited to take it to another level and begin my online teaching journey. My approach to learning is to be patient and supportive and answer all my students' questions. My job is to open your child's mind and for your child to learn as much as they can in the short time they are with me in class. I am to provide them with a safe and positive environment while discussing essential subjects.
