What's included

Homework
In addition to watching and responding to the instructional videos, each class will have some sort of homework opportunity for further learning. I will post 2-5 options, and students may choose the assignment that interests them the most. Once their assignment is complete, they should share about it in the classroom. Homework should take less than 30m a week to complete and may include further reading, simple experiments, continued observations, or another relevant option.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Is your child interested in many branches of science? Rather than focusing on one specific theme or area of science, we will look at many different branches and will begin to see how they relate to each other. This class, the second level in the series, covers beginning science concepts in the four areas of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Earth/Space Science. It covers more material and moves at a faster pace than my science class designed for younger learners. The prerequisite for this class is Science Foundations: Level 1 (Flex or Live).

Schedule:
--Chemistry--
Week 1 - Magnets
                --Magnets and their properties
Week 2 - Air Pressure
                --Air and the Earth's atmosphere.
Week 3 - A Deeper Look at Air
--The mixture of gases that make up air.

--Biology--
Week 4 - Scientific Classification
--Living things are organized into groups based on their similarities and differences.
Week 5 - Food Chains and Adaptations
--Animals are particularly adapted to eat specific types of food.

--Physics--
Week 6 - Matter and Energy
--A closer look at the difference between matter and energy.
Week 7 - Inertia
--Left alone, things in motion stay in motion and things at rest stay at rest.
Week 8 - Friction
--Concept of friction and everyday applications.

--Earth and Space Science--
Week 9 - Biomes
--Weather, climate, and their effect on ecosystems.
Week 10 - Time and Seasons
                --The Earth's rotation and revolution.

**Class Format**
This is a flexible schedule class with NO live meetings.

Monday
--Prerecorded instructional videos will be posted by 8am (MST) each Monday. Videos will be 10-20 minutes in length.

Wednesday
--By Wednesday of each week, each student will need to post in a classroom a short written or video response to the video as well as a picture of the entry they made in their science journal about that weeks topic.

Friday
--In addition, students will also be required to complete a small homework assignment by Friday. These assignments will be posted at the same time as the instructional videos on Mondays, so students will have the entire week to work on them. Don't wait until the last minute! For more on the homework, see the homework section below.

Other Details

Supply List
Notebook of choice to be used as a science journal. Please find a journal that plays to their unique needs and/or strengths. Past students have used art journals with blank pages, standard wide or college ruled spiral notebooks, and primary composition journals in which the top of the page is blank and the bottom has handwriting lined space. Each of these type of notebooks are widely available and generally cost $1-5. Please let me know if you have any questions.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
