What's included
Homework
1 hour per week. In addition to watching and responding to the instructional videos, each class will have some sort of homework opportunity for further learning. I will post 2-5 options, and students may choose the assignment that interests them the most. Once their assignment is complete, they should share about it in the classroom. Homework should take less than 30m a week to complete and may include further reading, simple experiments, continued observations, or another relevant option.Class Experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Do you have a young child interested in many branches of science? Rather than focusing on one specific theme or area of science, we will look at many different branches and will begin to see how they relate to each other. This class is a semester-long survey of beginning science concepts in the four areas of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Earth/Space Science. The main methods of learning are through interactive dialogue, scientific demonstrations, and science journaling. Material is supplemented by hands-on experiments assigned as homework when appropriate. Schedule: --Chemistry-- Week 1 - Solids, Liquids, and Gasses --All material in our world is made up of matter and can be classified as solid, liquid, or gas. Week 2 - A Special Look at Air --We will look specifically at air and prove that it IS matter even though we can't see it. --Biology-- Week 3 - Living and Nonliving --What is the difference between living and nonliving things? Week 4 - The Plant and Animal Kingdoms --Living things belong to the Plant or Animal Kingdoms. What makes them different? --Physics-- Week 5 - Energy --What is energy and what are the different kinds of energy? Week 6 - Sound --A closer look at sound as a result of energy. --Earth and Space Science-- Week 7 - Gravity --What is gravity and what are it's characteristics? Week 8 - Earth's Rotation --Exploration of earth's rotation and how it causes day and night. Students are not required to have any scientific experience. **Class Format** This is a flexible schedule class with NO live meetings. Monday --Prerecorded instructional videos will be posted by 8am (MST) each Monday. Videos will be 10-20 minutes in length. Wednesday --By Wednesday of each week, each student will need to post in a classroom a short written or video response to the video as well as a picture of the entry they made in their science journal about that weeks topic. Friday --In addition, students will also be required to complete a small homework assignment by Friday. These assignments will be posted at the same time as the instructional videos on Mondays, so students will have the entire week to work on them. Don't wait until the last minute! For more on the homework, see the homework section below.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be keeping science notebooks as a record of what the students have learned. I will not require writing if the student is still struggling with that skill, but ask that they do make an entry of some sort even if that just means a drawing that you are able to help them label. Upon registration, please share any special considerations that would make it difficult for your child to fulfill this requirement.
Supply List
Notebook of choice to be used as a science journal. Please find a journal that plays to their unique needs and/or strengths. Past students have used art journals with blank pages, standard wide or college ruled spiral notebooks, and primary composition journals in which the top of the page is blank and the bottom has handwriting lined space. Each of these type of notebooks are widely available and generally cost $1-5. Please let me know if you have any questions.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have six years of experience teaching this material in a co-op/classroom setting and with my own children. I truly believe that young children are born scientists and hope to help enkindle that passion for continued scientific learning!
