Description
Class Experience
Students will learn various 5th grade scientific concepts, including: ocean floor structure, force and motion, biomes, and states of matter. In this ongoing session of classes, students will cover the following concepts: Week 1- States of Matter (how they are determined) Week 2- States of matter (physical properties of matter and chemical properties, how they change) Week 3- Solutions vs. Mixtures Week 4- Scientific Inquiry and the Scientific Method Week 5- Biomes (Terrestrial) Week 6-...
Students will learn about biomes around the world, forces and motion, land features around the world, and basic chemistry including solutions and mixtures and the states of matter. Each concept will be covered as an introductory level concept, with opportunities for enrichment and engagement using life experience.
I am a 5th grade teacher, and have taught middle school science for 8 years from 6-8th grade. I am licensed as a science teacher from 6-12 grade, with a Masters in Science Education. I like making learning relate to real world experiences so students can connect to material easier than standard memorization. I review in a flow pattern that starts with basic information and expands into complex information to assist students with retention.
Students will be given practice material after each class, as well as a kahoot activity each unit to complete to support learning.
Handouts will be provided before each session on the discussion board as an attachment. Notetakers will be provided and are encouraged to be printed prior to session so students can fill in as we go. Supplemental materials will also be provided so students can review between sessions. Videos will be provided to all participants of each session.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be able to, at the end of each unit, complete a digital break out room and complete a quiz for each topic to support academic mastery.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Please review course information to ensure students may review key concepts with instructor. No sensitive material will be covered in this course, other than food chains and food webs (at a general introductory level)
Students will gain resources from the teacher, as well as use kahoot for review, Google for Breakout rooms, and Google Forms for assessment.
