Students will be able to, at the end of each unit, complete a digital break out room and complete a quiz for each topic to support academic mastery.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
Students will learn various 5th grade scientific concepts, including: ocean floor structure, force and motion, biomes, and states of matter. In this ongoing session of classes, students will cover the following concepts: Week 1- States of Matter (how they are determined) Week 2- States of matter (physical properties of matter and chemical properties, how they change) Week 3- Solutions vs. Mixtures Week 4- Scientific Inquiry and the Scientific Method Week 5- Biomes (Terrestrial) Week 6- Biomes (Aquatic) Week 7- Biomes (Food chains, webs, and energy transfer) Week 8- Ocean Structure (structure of the ocean floor) Week 9- Landforms and what they do Week 10- Landforms and how they are changed Week 11- Force and Motion- What is force Week 12- Force and Motion- How force is determined Each lesson, students will be provided a note taker to complete to refer back to after each class has ended. During each class, short videos from Youtube will be played if supporting to the curriculum in question (many of the videos used in this class come from "Crash Course Kids" to support curriculum). Students will review during class using mini-quiz methods (verbal, respond in the chat, etc) to ensure comprehension as we progress through the class. The last 5 minutes are dedicated to Q/A to ensure students gain understanding or opportunities for extension of knowledge. If private tutoring is needed, please message me to schedule a session. In addition to conversations in class, students will have a series of activities each week to complete outside of class including: - Practice activity- this may include reading comprehension on a topic, an organizer to complete, etc - Kahoot- this is a review game students will receive a weekly code to that will allow them to review between units. - Digital Breakout room to complete at the end of each unit (week 3, 4, 7, 10, and 12) - Quiz to complete for mastery/assessment at the end of each unit (week 3, 4, 7, 10, and 12)- scores will be emailed to families for academic records. This class is primarily lecture-based due to the rich content being covered, but students are encouraged to answer questions, share experiences throughout many points in each lesson through conversations. *Background knowledge is desired, but not needed as these are introductory to the concepts. *Please note that if a class is scheduled for a major US holiday (4th of July, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc), that week will be a recorded class. For international students, if it is a major holiday for you, please let me know and I will ensure the video is made available immediately.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about biomes around the world, forces and motion, land features around the world, and basic chemistry including solutions and mixtures and the states of matter. Each concept will be covered as an introductory level concept, with opportunities for enrichment and engagement using life experience.
