Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
- to broaden their scientific view of the world around them.
- to explore, talk about, test and develop ideas about everyday phenomena and the relationships between living things and familiar environments.
- to ask their own questions about what they observe and make some decisions about which types of scientific enquiry are likely to be the best ways of answering them, including observing changes over time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things, carrying out simple comparative and fair tests and finding things out using secondary sources of information.
- to draw conclusions and use scientific language, first, to talk about and, later, to write about what they have found out.
This course will be taught by a UK qualified teacher who has over 15 years experience of teaching children from age 3-11. They hold a BA (Hons) degree in Education which qualifies them to teach all subjects including science. The course overview and resources have been developed by a UK qualified teacher who specialises in educational course design.
Each week, learners will complete an activity together in class as we explore the wonderful world of science together. They will also be given a factfile page to print off which can gradually build up into a science encyclopaedia of knowledge as well as a sticker to celebrate what they have learnt that lesson. There is also an optional extra activity that can be completed at home to consolidate their learning.
All materials for each lesson will be posted in the classroom at least 24 hours in advance. Learners should print out the class worksheet and bring it to the lesson so that we can complete it together. They should also have a supply of basic stationary such as paper, pencils, crayons, scissors and glue.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
The scientific information from the course will be sourced from books that present a factual view of science without any bias and are used in many schools all over the world. The key sources are:
- First Science Encyclopaedia (DK Eyewitness Companion Guide)
- DK Knowledge Encyclopaedia Science
- First Encyclopaedia of Science (Usborne International)
