This class is designed for readers like me—ready to dive into the complexity and excitement of science fiction novels! Whether you’ve been a sci-fi reader for years or want to start exploring the genre, join our weekly discussions of one of my favorites, THE DIRT EATERS (Longlight Legacy Book 1) by Dennis Foon, over the course of 5 weeks. Each week expect to read 60-67 pages of the novel for the facilitated discussion during class meetings. Each meeting will also involve a short writing...
Our reading goals are to enjoy, deepen, and share the excitement, wonder, and complex thinking inherent in reading science fiction novels. Our meeting goals are to complete writing prompts that apply core literary concepts (setting, plot, character, conflict, world-building), spark creativity, and to productively participate in discussions in a way that works for each student and the group.
Before each weekly class meeting, students will read a series of chapters from our book, 60-67 pages depending on the week. The time this takes varies highly between readers, so please consider this when planning for the course.
Learners will need a copy of the book to read in any format, library book, purchased, paper, digital, audio, etc. Learners will need access to google docs to write, share, and receive feedback for writing prompts.
I can provide a letter grade for students upon request.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
YA books (generally marketed to readers over 12 years old) can involve topics relating to romantic relationships, challenging political/societal/social dynamics, and some violence. Please check out the book we’re planning to read to make sure the selection works for your reader(s). I read every book we discuss before bringing it to the Sci-Fi Book Club with Alma.
