Description
Class Experience
This science fiction work is suited for younger children with a reading level of at least 4th grade. Each student will read the assigned chapters prior to class. In class we will discuss the story, highlighting the story elements and the characteristics that make this book a part of the science fiction genre. We will accomplish the class learning goals weekly through a group discussion, a learning game to help with recall and comprehension; and a question and answer session where students...
1. Students will develop or strengthen an appreciation for the genre through participation in class activities. 2. Students will become familiar with some literary devices. (characters, plot, foreshadowing) 3. Students will participate in group discussions designed to help them predict outcomes and recall developments in the plot. 4. Students will prepare and present a final project based on the story.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Education and have taught English classes for many years. I have loved reading since I read my first chapter book at age seven. I soon discovered science fiction and fantasy and have been in love with these genres ever since. More than anything else, I believe instilling a love for good literature and reading helps children develop imagination, good character, and a lifelong habit of learning. Star Ka'at was the book I used with my own sons to introduce them to science fiction when they were young. It has been a family favorite. Now my sons are reading this exciting story to their children.
Homework will consist of assigned chapter readings for each class and a final project. The final projects offered as choices will be designed to take about 1-2 hours to complete. Students will choose a final project form among the choices provided. If they wish to do a different project, it must be approved by the teacher.
A copy of the book: Star Ka'at by Andre Norton and Dorothy Madlee. YOu may find it in your local library or purchase it from an online retailer. Amazon currently has the paperback listed for $2.50. The Kindle edition lists at $2.99.
No formal assessment will be used, unless specifically requested by a parent. Students will be informally evaluated during class as they take part in the chapter discussions. Scaffolding (building on a students prior knowledge and skills) is used to encourage relevant participation in the discussions and activities.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
