Description

Class Experience

Students will strengthen reading comprehension and analysis skills including summarizing, inferencing, predicting, and making connections. Students will learn new vocabulary words and practice using context clues to identify unknown words. Students will discuss plot and story elements. Students will practice communication, cooperation, and leadership skills. Students will have an enjoyable reading experience.
Students will read 5 chapters per week (about 70 pages) and write down 1-5 brief conversation starters, such as something they wondered while reading or an interesting new vocabulary word they discovered. I will also provide chapter by chapter reader response questions as optional homework.
"City of Ember" by Jeanne DuPrau
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
The City of Ember was created to be a safe place in the possibility that Earth became uninhabitable. We will discuss why Earth could be uninhabitable (climate change, war) in an age appropriate way.
