Science Fiction Book Club: An Acceptable Time-Madeleine L'Engle
Class experience
US Grade 4 - 7
Students will read and discuss the book, An Acceptable Time, fifth in the Time Quintet by Madeleine L'Engle. In six sessions students will be assigned the reading for each class and will discuss the sections read previously. Each class will provide insight into the ideas presented and explore ways we may have already seen some advances in the concepts, since the book was written in the 1980's. Students will be encouraged to think of ways dimensional and time travel could impact our lives,...
1. Participation by all class members in discussions 2. Understanding of the ideas presented by the author 3 Demonstration of critical, and out of the box, thinking skills 4. Completion of two class projects designed to help the learner better understand the ideas presented in the book.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Education and have taught English classes for many years. I have loved reading since I read my first chapter book at age 7. I soon discovered science fiction and fantasy and have been in love with these genres ever since. More than anything else I believe instilling a love for good literature and reading helps children develop imagination, good character, and a lifelong habit of learning. This book, 'An Acceptable Time', is the fifth in the 'Time' series, which was my initial introduction into science fiction at the age of 10. I have successfully completed the first four novels of this time quintet with students here at Outschool. They have requested to do a study of this final book in the series.

This story explores Druids in the Americas, from three thousand years ago as L'Engle attempts to reconcile pagan and christian beliefs in a fictional and secular story of time travel. Characters pulled from others of L'Engle's books take part in this time travel adventure and bring to an end the five- part, time trilogy that began with "A Wrinkle in Time".
