Join me in this ongoing class where we will meet weekly to explore different topics in science for grades 4-6. Each week we will move on to a new topic of interest and go in-depth into discussion about that aspect of the natural world. This series is designed to flow, but learners do not need to attend all classes to enjoy the content. We will cover a wide range of scientific fields and understanding, from the very small to the very big and everything in between! We will approach our topics from an interactive standpoint with support from visual aids -- I encourage all learners to participate in discussion and ask lots of questions! Learners will have many opportunities to interact with me as we explore the natural world. I will also provide worksheets to help us reinforce our learning, that I can assess as requested. Our schedule of topics is as follows (though it may change slightly as I develop the classes and refine the content): 1. Chemistry: Introduction to atoms and molecules (Week of September 6) 2. Chemistry: Solutions (Week of September 13) 3. Chemistry: Acids and Bases and pH Indicators (Week of September 20) 4. Physics: Laws of Motion (Week of September 27) 5. Physics: Work and Force (Week of October 4) 6. Physics: Fundamental Forces of the Universe (Week of October 11) 7. Earth Science: Introduction to the Globe and Seasons (Week of October 25) 8. Earth Science: Earth's Climate Machine (Week of November 1) 9. Earth Science: Clouds and Winds (Week of November 8) 10. Earth Science: Severe Weather and Lightning (Week of November 15) 11. Earth Science: Journey to Earth's Core (Week of November 22) 12. Biology: Ecosystems and the Food Web (Week of November 29) 13. Biology: DNA - The Blueprints for Life (Week of December 6) 14. Biology: Taxonomy - Classifying Life on Earth (Week of December 13) 15. Biology: Cells and Microbial Life (Week of December 20) 16. Health: Anatomy of Major Human Systems (Week of January 10) 17. Health: Disease and the Immune System (Week of January 17) 18. Health: The Brain Anatomy (Week of January 24) 19. Health: The Senses (Week of February 7) 20. Health: Sleep and Dreams - The Unconscious World (Week of February 14) 21. Health: An Introduction to Nutrition (Week of February 28 22. Physics: Light in the Universe - What We Can and Cannot See (Week of March 7) 23. Physics: Waves - Light and Sound (Week of March 14) 24. Physics: Aerodynamics and Flight (Week of March 21) 25. Physics: Introduction to Astronomy (Week of March 28) 26. Physics: An Introduction to Our Solar System (Week of April 11) 27. Physics: The Formation of Our Solar System (Week of April 18) 28. Physics: An Introduction to Our Universe (Week of April 25) 29. Physics: All About Energy (Week of May 2) 30. Physics: Electricity and Magnetism (Week of May 9) Learners do not need any prior experience with science to enjoy these classes. We will cover conceptual science and I will provide optional worksheets and activities for everyone to follow along with if desired. Upon request I can also assess learner progress.
Learning Goals
Learners will obtain a foundational understanding of the natural world, the laws of physics, and how it is all interconnected.
Other Details
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Science from Athabasca University
Natasha has been teaching a variety of science topics to youth from age 3 and up for the past 7 years, with particular emphasis on the grade 4-6 age range. She has been a science enthusiast since she was a young learner, and thinks it's important to help youth understand the importance and breadth of science in our lives.
