Science Experiments - We Learn - We Team Build to Identify Problems - We Invent

We do seemingly random science experiments and learn the fundamental principles. We analyse uses for the principle, where is it used in our world.. often referring to past inventions. Team work - analyse, team build, brain storm, invent.

What's included

16 live meetings
16 in-class hours
Projects
1 hour per week. I will assign a project that will give the child the opportunity to implement and summarise the science principle or principles that we have learned during the week.
Assessment
I will give an assessment at the end of the course or more frequently if requested.. I want the children to focus on enjoying what they are learning and know from experience that if they are trying to find problems and inventive solutions themselves, they will have a far higher retention rate and as such I prefer to keep assessment to a minimum.

Class Experience

US Grade 5
Beginner Level
I teach the application of a balance of science subjects and principles in a way that is engaging and where the children see the practical application. I am careful that no child is left behind and I confirm their understanding with kindly questioning. I teach in a way that is supportive of their academic school class structure and only speak positively of all school and learning experiences. After the first lesson I will communicate via the Outschool platform to inform of the next class so students can prepare/arrange materials so we can all do the experiments together simultaneously. This greatly encourages the confidence of the child as they themselves perform the experiment and understand the underlying principles, however we go further and try to find application ourselves for these principles.. more wacky the better! Kids learn that team working in these situations is so important. They thus gain a love of science and its application, especially as I try to include examples of the science principle in the world around us.

Learning Goals

Students will learn principles which govern the natural world around us, such as surface tension of water, magnetic induction and the flow of electrons and the flow of ions in electrolytes such as acidic lemon juice. And many many other principles.
They will learn that ordinary people who have an awareness of science can become inventors, thus motivating them to enjoy, learn and study science. They will build up more appreciation of the natural world, the way it works and our need to care for it.

Other Details

Learning Needs
As an experienced teacher I have extra materials to cater for students that are disadvantaged whilst making them feel part of the whole learning experience.
Parental Guidance
I am not aware of anything scary or dangerous however I build into my classes an awareness of dangers and so before doing project work/making/building etc, together we do a little risk assessment - what could happen.. slips, trips, falls etc Also worth mentioning is that I assign this risk assessment part to the students, nominating one of them to conduct the risk assessment with all in the group before we start any project work.
Pre-Requisites
No prerequisites
Supply List
Small magnets, copper wire, 9v battery, AA battery, paper, cardboard, scissors, tape, lemons, crocodile clips, 2 pin LED`s, baking soda, vinegar..
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I use various science and engineering books that I have procured over the years for the purpose of teaching. I am familiar with appropriate level lessons and have adapted them to go a bit further and be applicable for encouraging inventing.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have an engineering background in the engineering trades as well as many years of teaching in a technical college and private schools. I have a keen interest in science and in inventing. Patents are very expensive and though I hold no patents for my own inventions I have completed 2 Provisional patent applications with the US Patent office and am currently working on other ideas/inventions. As such I am realistic about inventing, the challenges as well as opportunities.
