US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
In this ongoing class, scientists will learn the scientific method and apply it to various science experiments. This class aims to use items found around the house, or on some weeks, small items that can be easily purchased inexpensively at the dollar store. The scientist and lead scientist will conduct experiments together and talk about scientific topics demonstrated. Your scientist may also choose to watch the experiment being performed. Either way this class is highly interactive with questions, discussions, and songs. Scientists will practice being a good scientist by focusing on observing the world around us and using parts of the scientific method. Week of: May 16: Can a solid form a liquid and a gas? May 23: Can a substance behave as two different states of matter? May 30: Does temperature affect how a solid dissolves? June 6: Can an egg bounce? June 13: How can I demonstrate Newton’s first law of motion? June 20: How can I demonstrate Newton’s second law of motion? June 27: How can I demonstrate Newton’s third law of motion? July 4: How do liquids of different densities behave? July 11: No class July 18: How does soap work? August 1:How are clouds formed? August 8: How does it rain and snow? August 15: no class August 22: no class August 29: How do movies work? September 5: Can a gas put a fire out? September 12: What is an acid and a base? September 19:How does warm and cool air behave? September 26:How do ducks stay dry? For the week of August 8 you will need a glass jar, water, shaving cream, liquid (not gel) food coloring, and a spoon. Scientists are invited to watch or to follow along with parent guidance. Please know that this class operates on an eighteen week cycle. If you stay longer than eighteen weeks you will see an experiment you have seen before. You are welcome to stay and review the concepts!

Teacher expertise and credentials
It is so nice to welcome you into my little space here on Outschool! I live outside of Louisville, Ky with my husband and children. A love of learning can be sparked from a very young age. If nurtured properly, that love can create a pathway of freedom to be confident in any subject. In my shared learning space, I am open to lots of questions and invite positive attitudes. I often tell my daughters: "When something is hard, that means your brain is growing!"
Over the years I have realized that the key to education is a love of learning. I credit this discovery to my journey in homeschooling my children (for the last ten years!) in the classical education model. Every day I strive to increase, not just knowledge, but to model for my children a love of learning and a humility that comes along with gaining wisdom. I have taught small classes of all ages over the years. In these classes I have helped to foster openness and curiosity. I currently teach reading through a science of reading method, grammar, and writing composition. In the past I have also taught English as a foreign language to children as young as four and adults old enough to admit they didn't have their teeth in (I was wondering why she couldn't pronounce that one phoneme)!
I look forward to seeing your learner in the classroom. Please follow me so you can be alerted when I post new classes. Feel free to message me with any questions or requests you might have. I would love to walk alongside you and be a small part of your learner's educational journey.
Testimonials:
"Ms. Rachel is amazing! She knows the logic of english curriculum sooooo well. My daughter LOVES their time together. I have seen so much growth and confidence. She really focuses on the spelling rules which has been so helpful for us and she does it in a really fun way. My daughter calls her the 'fun reading teacher'."
"My son is loving this class and we will continue to attend. My son has a special affinity for science experiments, so he loves to follow along and do the experiments. I just need to make sure we have the materials ready! The materials are common household products and as long as I know in advance, I pick them up at the grocery or $1 store prior to class. The teacher is great in that she doesn't 'dumb down' the scientific process and teaches the kids 'big words' and 'big concepts' which I think they can absolutely handle if taught about them! 5 stars."
"She really took her time to help me find a path for my son. Patient and knowledgeable. Great resource teacher and parent. Thank you so much!!"
"My daughter enjoyed the class. She decided to be shy, but was encouraged to share 3 things about her object. With the teacher's help, she did a great job. Good listening skills were also encouraged. I liked how the teacher gave an example first. I hope to take another class with this teacher again."
