Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
⚡Young Scientists! ⚡

This class is a flexible learning class with 20 lessons over 8 weeks. each lesson will look at an aspect of science and scientific research. There are videos and note-taking exercises along with hands on experiments to learn concepts such as osmosis and extracting DNA.

The class is split into 4 sections, each learning different scientific concepts.

In section one we will learn about:
⭐ The water content in food
⭐ Osmosis
⭐ Graphing
⭐ Scientific recording
⭐ Scientific observation and experiments

In section two we will learn about:
⭐ The properties of water
⭐ Interpreting scientific results
⭐ The density of water

In section three we will learn about:
⭐ Living organisms
⭐ Single celled organisms
⭐ Variables in experiments
⭐ The importance of yeast

In section four we will learn about:
⭐ DNA
⭐ Extracting DNA
⭐ The importance of DNA to scientists

This is a flexible learning course so does not meet live. Instead each lesson will have a learning video along with activities to complete and guided notes to take. Learners will be expected to participate in classroom activities such as group experiment conclusions and comparisons. Students will need to share their results and discuss how they came to their conclusions.

Each lesson learners will be provided with notebook and worksheet pages to be printed out and filled in, at the end of the course they will have a complete scientific notebook. Alternatively you can purchase the pre-printed notebook from Amazon to be completed in class without the need to print off each individual page.

The breakdown of the weekly work is as follows:

Week one: We will have two lessons this week, the first explaining the course and expectations for participation and general safety. In the second lesson we will be conducting an experiment on potatoes and expected to share our results and compare them with other class members' results to draw conclusions

Week two: Will have three lessons, we will be conducting an osmosis experiment, looking at the results using class results to draw conclusions and also completing an online quiz to ensure understanding

Week three: This week we have three lessons and will conduct experiments using ice. We will interpret our results, participate in designing a class experiment and then analyse the results.

Week four: This week we will have two lessons to learn about changing parts of experiments and to learn about density. This week we will also be taking an online quiz to check our understanding of section two.

Week five: This week has three lessons, we will be looking at single-celled organisms and what makes something "living". We will conduct experiments on yeast and share the results and look for conclusions.

Week six: This week has three lessons, covering variables in science, the importance of yeast and section three quiz

Week seven: This week we will have two lessons. We will learn about DNA, understanding what it is and then conducting an experiment to extract the DNA from fruit. Learners will be expected to share results and participate in informed conclusion drawing.

Week eight: In our final week we will have two lessons focusing on interpreting individual and group results as well as a final quiz and round up of learning.

There will be equipment needed for each experiment as listed below but you will be reminded of these in the lesson before the equipment is needed. As these are flexible classes you can wait and conduct the experiment when you have the equipment.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how scientific study works, why recording and then analysing results is important. They will conduct experiments to learn about concepts such as osmosis and DNA

Parental Guidance
Some of the experiments may require parental supervision younger children, for example the fruit may need to be cut and use of the microwave to heat the potatoes.
